LaMarcus Miller to star in premiere of first opera about Iraqi War

LaMarcus Miller

LaMarcus Miller, who first appeared on this site competing in the Met Auditions, has landed the leading baritone role in Tobin Stokes and Heather Raffo's Fallujah at the Long Beach Opera. Miller sang in the workshop at the Kennedy Center, which was one of a series over the last four years including at Arena Stage, the Noor Theater in New York City and The Culture Project in New York City. The Long Beach production will be the official world premiere.

The opera's characters were inspired by people United States Marine Christian Ellis encountered, including fallen comrades. In 2004, Christian Ellis was a young US Marine fighting in the Iraq War. He suffered a broken back when his platoon was ambushed, and was one of the few survivors. When eventually he returned home he found himself battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Ellis has attempted suicide four times since returning from Iraq and used developing the opera as a vehicle to deal with the stress. Ellis' mother was a singer who pushed him to play the trumpet and start singing lessons when he was nine years old.

Award-winning Iraqi-American playwright and librettist Heather Raffo met Ellis in the winter of 2011. After extensive interviews began the process with composer Tobin Stokes of translating elements of Ellis's wartime experience into the opera. Fallujah is believed to be the first opera to deal with the Iraqi War.

Performances will run from March 12-20 the National Guard Armory in Long Beach. Tickets are available online. 

In 2012, LaMarcus Miller won First Place at the Nico Castel International Master Singer Competition at Carnegie Hall. That same year he won the Encouragement Award at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition for the Eastern Region.

Brett Carter to set himself on fire after wrapping up sexy Valentin in Mainz

We've posted about Aussie barihunk Brett Carter's sexy Valentin in Gounod's Faust (Margerete) before. He is down to his last two performances on January 17 and February 14th at the Staatstheater in Mainz, where he is a member of the ensemble. You can get tickets and additional cast information online.

On March 11th, he'll open in Pascal Dusapin's Perelà with the amazing tenor Peter Tantsits in the title role. Perelà tells the story of the mysterious "man of smoke" who appears in an unnamed city, and charts his rise and fall through a series of tragicomic encounters with its inhabitants. The opera does include male nudity for the tenor. Carter sings the role of the old valet Alloro,who sets himself on fire hoping to emulate the lightness of Perelà. 

 

On December 26th and January 19th, he'll be singing Orff's Carmina Burana in Mainz with soprano Marie-Christine Haase and countertenor Alin Deleanu. In July, he returns to his native Australia where he''ll sing the title role in Rossini's The Barber of Seville at the Queensland Performing Arts Center.

Carter studied Classical Guitar and Voice at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He then became a member of the Australian Opera Studio where his roles included Mozart’s Conte Almaviva, Don Giovanni and Britten’s Tarquinius. After receiving a Scholarship to participate in the Cincinnati Music Festival in Lucca, Italy, he then went on to become a Young Artist with Opera Queensland. During this time he received first prize in the German Australian Opera Grant and from 2007- 2014 was a member of the Hessischen Staatstheater in Wiesbaden.

BEST NEWCOMERS: Jason Duika was new to our site this year and his beach photos proved so popular that we invited him to appear in our 2016 Barihunks Charity Calendar, where he proved just as popular. He was a finalist last year in the James Toland Vocal Competition and is currently a young artist with the Palm Beach Opera where he will sing Dancairo, cover Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen, sing the family performance and cover Dr. Malatesta in Donizettis Don Pasquale, sing Paquiro in Granados' Goyescas, and sing the Wigmaker in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos.

These are some photos of Iosu Yeregui that didn't make it into the calendar, as they were not of high enough resolution, so we thought we'd share them now. The singer was born in San Sebastian, where he studied contemporary dance, flute and humanities for business. On stage, he's performed Sarastro in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Colas in Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne and, most recently, Lodovico in Verdi's Otello with Opera de la ABAO in Bilbao, Spain.

BEST COMEBACK: Dmitri Hvorostovsky made a triumphant return to the stage on September 25th in the Met's Il Trovatore after being treated for brain cancer in London. The New York audience greeting him with rollicking applause. He was joined by Anna Netrebko as the heroine Leonora, Dolora Zajick as the gypsy Azucena, Yonghoon Lee as Manrico and Štefan Kocán as Ferrando. Unfortunately, we recently learned that he's returning to London for additional treatments.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also bestowed the Order of Alexander Nevsky on Hvorostovsky, which is given for exceptional artistry over a period of 20 years or more.

BEST NEW SONG PERFORMANCE: We can't imagine a better new song in the lieder repertory than one about our favorite topic. Michael Weyandt premiered Clint Borzoni's "The Barihunk Song" at the National Opera Center in New York in March. The composer and blond barihunk also teamed up at operamission for "When Adonis Calls" with a libretto by John De Los Santos based on erotic poetry by Gavin Geoffrey Dillard.  Borzoni will premiering two new songs On January 22 and 24 with barihunk Marco Vassalli and Musica Marin written for String Quartet and Baritone.

HOTTEST PORTRAYAL OF A REAL PERSON: These pictures of bass-barihunk Soloman Howard's portrayal of boxing legend  Muhammad Ali proved extremely popular with our readers. He performed DJ Sparr's Approaching Ali with bothe the North Carolina Opera and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.  He'll be performing Prince Gremin in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin in January with the North Carolina Opera and Fafner in Wagner's Das Rheingold with the Wshington National Opera in April/May 2016.

Dan Kempson in Streetcar Named Desire (with honorary barihunk Carrie Hennessey)

HOTTEST PHOTOS: Dan Kempson created a sensation with his performance of Stanley in André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire, which was done in collaboration between the Fresno Grand Opera and Townsend Opera in Modesto. The opera played to enthusiastic crowds and his photos were the second most viewed on the site this year. Sadly, Kempson has announced his premature retirement from opera to pursue an advanced degree in opera/music administration. We wish him the best of luck. (Barihunks Liam Bonner and Jason Hardy have also announced their early retirements).

His biography was not only the funniest singer bios that we'd ever read, but it perfectly lampooned the beefed up biographies that many performers post on their websites. A sample: "While he isn’t exactly sought after, he has amassed an impressive resume of over 70 roles in his short career."

HOTTEST NUDE SCENES: Philipp Hochmair's performance in "Der Ring: Siegfried/Götterdämmerung"isn't technically opera, as it was a theater piece based on The Ring with music by Wagner. But who could argue with Hochmair's full frontal assault in the role of Siegfried as the innocent forest child, which is true to the original story as the hero bathes in the blood of the freshly slain dragon to become invincible.

For a performance in an actual opera, one couldn't beat Christopher Maltman's full monty in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride at the Whitsun Festival at Salzburg. The British singer is no stranger to nudity, having appeared in the buff in the Kasper Holten's movie Juan and in Mozart's Don Giovanni in Salzburg.

Roesner is the most featured calendar model this year, appearing on our cover, as well as in January, June and December. The singer has modeled in the past and was featured in an ad campaign for the opera company in Braunschweig. He's also one of the most intelligent singers who we've ever encountered and has translated librettos into German, including Jake Heggie's For a Look or a Touch and Jonathan Dove's Mansfield Park.

Vassalli took so many sexy photos that we helped him put together a separate calendar, where $10 of each purchase will go to fund his upcoming US debut with Musica Marin on January 22 and 24. BEST COMPETITION WINNERS: Low male voices swept the 2015 Wigmore/Kohn International Song Competition as Milan Siljanov took 1st Prize, Samuel Hasselhorn took 2nd Prize and James Newby took 3rd Prize. Newby added to the sweep by also winning the Richard Tauber Prize given for the best interpretation of Schubert. His program included Finzi's Let us garlands bring and Schubert's An Sylvia?

BEST REALITY TV PERFORMANCE: Finnish barihunk Waltteri Torikka won MTV's singing competition Tähdet, Tähdet (Stars, Stars) garnering 58% of the vote and bringing the audience to its feet with his own hip swinging rendition of Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca.  His victory culminated a two month journey that included performances of Whitesnake's Still of Night, a country version of "Ring of Fire," the punk rock song "Hei hei mitä kuuluu," a Finnish tango, and even an Ozzy Osbourne-esque version of Scarpia from Tosca!

Torikka was subsequently voted as the "Sexiest Man in Finland" by the readers of the women's magazine Eeva (Eve).

Introducing barihunk Brian James Myer

Brian James Myer, who is new to our site,  is joining Hans Tashjian as one of the 2016 Chautauqua Opera Young Artists. Myer just wrapped up a run as the title character in Rossini's The Barber of Seville at the Florida Grand Opera, which was his debut with the company. He will return to Florida Grand Opera this Spring to cover both Tadeusz in Mieczyslaw Weinberg's The Passenger and Malatesta in Donizetti's Don Pasquale.

Myer was born in Tarzana, California and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he began piano lessons at age nine.  He subsequently studied flute, cello, guitar, and voice.

Recent engagements include Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with Sin City Opera and Opera San Jose, Gino Carella in Mark Lanz Weiser's Where Angels Fear to Tread with Opera San Jose, Silvio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci with Sarasota Opera, Masetto  in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Opera San Jose and Opera Las Vegas, Yamadori in Puccini's Madama Butterfly with Opera Las Vegas, Albert in Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe with Chautauqua Opera, and Le Dancaïre in Bizet's Carmen with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in Ontario, Canada.

Myer won first place prizes at the National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions in both Nevada and Ohio.  He received two young artist encouragement awards from Chautauqua Opera and is a recipient of the Albert Rees Davis Scholarship from The Singers Club of Cleveland  He was also a regional finalist in the NATS Artist Award (Cal-Western Region) and a semifinalist in the American Institute of Musical Studies Meistersinger competition.

Myer volunteered for the music program with the Clark County School District and served as a middle school choir teacher.  He participated in the Palm Springs Opera Guild Outreach Program, bringing opera to over 13,500 students in the Coachella Valley.  He is also a published composer, whose choral octavo can be found and purchased at Santa Barbara Music Publishing, Inc.

Austrian barihunk Thomas Tatzl is one of the few singers who has performed Papageno by two different composers, having frequently sung Mozart's in Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), but also Peter von Winter’s in his production of Das Labyrith at the Salzburger Festspiele. Now he's also one of the few singers to have performed the role in a dress (topless with a chorus of transsexual nuns!) .

Tatzl, who has sung 10 Mozart roles in his young career, will perform Papageno through March 28th at the Theater Basel. He'll be singing some additional Mozart at Sage One in Newcastle, England on February 5th when he performs the composer's Mass in C-minor with an all-star cast that includes Sally Matthews, Rosemary Joshua and Stuart Jackson with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Chorus.

There isn't much that could've gotten us to take our eyes off of the gorgeous, underwear clad men dancing and writing around the stage during the Paris Opera's La Damnation de Faust, except perhaps Edwin Crossley-Mercer. The barihunk managed to stand out singing the Song of the Rat (Chanson de Brander) in an all-star cast that included Bryn Terfel as Mephistopheles, Jonas Kaufmann as Faust and Sophie Koch as Marguerite. The controversial production by director and set designer Alvis Hermanis, which was booed by some in the audience, re-imagined Faust’s intellectual daring in the age of Stephen Hawking and the exploration of the Universe. Hawking appears as a silent character throughout the opera who [spoiler alert] stands up at the end of the opera.

Whatever one thinks of the production, which you can currently watch on Culturebox, the singing from all of the principles is magnificent under the baton of Philippe Jordan. If you like a little skin with your opera, it might be worth watching, as there is plenty of eye candy to pass the time.

Barihunk quartet (and hunkentenor) in Zurich's Il viaggio Reims

The Zürich Opera's new production of Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims features a bit of skin as well as quartet of barihunks and an American hunkentenor.  The low voices include Nahuel Di Pierro as Lord Sidney, Scott Conner as Don Profondo, Pavol Kubàn as Don Alvaro and Roberto Lorenzi as Don Prudenzio. They join hunkentenor Spencer Lang as Don Luigino. The show opened on December 6th, but has seven more performances through January 9th.

We featured Scott Conner after he won the Loren Zachary Competition (using a shirtless photo!), Nahuel Di Pierro was in a Don Giovanni post, and Kubàn was a reader submission two years ago. Roberto Lorenzi is the newcomer to this site. 

Lorenzi studied at the Luigi Boccherini Institute of Musical Studies.He has been a prize winner at the Titta Ruffo and Riccardo Zandonai competitions, and took first prize in 2011 at AsLiCo’s 62nd annual competition, where he was awarded the role of Don Basilio Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia in Lombardy. He is a member of the Zurich International Opera Studio and debuted on the main stage as Priore in Bellini's La straniera alongside Edita Gruberova. In Zürich, he's appeared in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Il matrimonio segreto, La fanciulla del West and Rigoletto.

David McFerrin interviewed on public radio for Medieval Holiday Concert

David McFerrin, who we last featured singing in Philip Glass' The Penal Colony with Boston Lyric Opera, is going back a few centuries to perform "Christmas in Medieval England" with the Blue Heron music ensemble. They opened last night in Cambridge, Massachusetts and will perform two more show there today and an additional show in Providence on Sunday, December 20. Tickets are available online.

Blue Heron has been performing vocal music of the Renaissance and medieval periods for over 15 years and McFerrin has performed and traveled with the ensemble. The current concert includes music for Advent and Christmas from 15th-century England, including motets by Leonel Power and John Dunstaple, English carols, and Sarum plainchant.

Eric Westerfelt of public radio's Here & Now show recently interviewed McFerrin and Scott Metcalfe, the music director of Blue Heron, which you can listen to below.



In March 2016, McFerrin will return to the Boston Lyric Opera to perform in Massenet's Werther and then the following month in Lehàr's The Merry Widow with fellow barihunk Jesse Blumberg. He'll also be performing a concert of Broadway hits with the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota.

We finally have pictures of Barihunks calendar model Malte Roesner as Edmund Bertram from Jonathan Dove's Mansfield Park, which opened on December 5th at the Staatstheater Braunschweig and has additional performances on January 2 and 10, and February 21 and 26. Tickets are available online.

The multi-talented Roesner also translated the libretto from English into German, which he also recently did with Jake Heggie's Holocaust themed opera For a Look or a Touch.

The 18-scene chamber opera is based on the 1814 novel by Jane Austen. It's the story of Fanny Price, a Cinderella-like heroine, who quietly negotiates her way through the moral perils of early nineteenth century high society, from landscape gardening and amateur theatricals to balls and arranged marriages, and wins the hand of the man she has loved all her life. Edmund Bertram is the lead character of the novel. He intends to be a clergyman is known for his kindness and generosity towards Fanny, distinguishing him from the rest of his family, who tend to exploit her good nature and mock her less privileged upbringing.

The opera will be heard in the United States on March 18, 19 and 20 at the Indianapolis Opera with barihunk Gregory Gerbrandt taking on the role of Edmund Bertram. Additional information is available online.

We had to share these stunning new photos of Sean Kroll by photographer Matt Madison-Clark. Kroll recently wrapped up some Christmas concerts in New York after a run as Figaro earlier this year with dell'Arte Opera.

This season he'll be performing Oroe from Semiramide in Empire Opera's concert of Rossini's music inspired from Voltaire, which also includes Tancredi.

Kroll is an alumnus of the Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Santa Barbara and Saint Petersburg Opera artist development programs. He received his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Northwestern University and trained at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy. He performed Poulenc’s rarity Le Bestiaire with the Chicago Opera Theater. He currently studies with noted vocal instructor Bill Schuman in New York City.

Ed Parks to make Hungarian debut

Ed Parks to appear at the Budapest Congress Center

Operalia finalist Ed Parks will be making his Hungarian debut at the Budapest Congress Center on December 21st in Budapest. He'll be performing a Christmas concert with soprano Ingrid Kertesi, the Kodály Children's Choir and the Máv Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ádám Medveczky.

The benefit concert will make complementary tickets available for grandparents and their grandchildren. The goal of the concert is to strengthen the Christmas bond between generations.

Parks returns to the U.S. to cover David Pershall (who we recently posted about) as Schaunard in Puccini's La bohème at the Metropolitan Opera from January 6-23. On February 13th, he'll appear as part of the Cliburn Concerts in Fort Worth, Texas performing the music of Ben Moore with accompanist Brian Zeger. In May, he'll head to the Atlanta Opera to perform Mercutio in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette.
