Introducing barihunk Geoffrey Hahn: Performing in Dichterliebe: POETLOVE

Barihunk Geoffrey Hahn will perform in Dichterliebe: POETLOVE, a 27-minute cinematic adaptation of Schumann's song cycle at the new Steinway Hall in Manhattan on Thursday, November 10th.

POETLOVE is a musical short film harnessing the power of art song, but set in modern day New York.  Like Schumann's cycle, it tells the story of a young man who falls hopelessly in love, in this case it's a Bushwick-based performer, Amalia -- before spiraling into a manic-depressive state from her rejection. By confronting his demons and putting his story into songs, he's able to reemerge and move forward, older and stronger.

POETLOVE was shot largely in Williamsburg, with additional shooting throughout the city and in New Hampshire, and is told entirely through the Heine/Schumann songs from the cycle.  The piece is performed in a new English translation and features Kerri Sohn as Amalia.

Since its premiere in March 2016, the film's had considerable success on the festival circuit, winning prizes at the Geneva and Hong Kong Arthouse Film Festivals, and playing at festivals around the country and in Asia.

California native Geoffrey Hahn is new to this site. He's currently pursuing his Master's degree in voice on a full scholarship from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where he recently performed the role of Demetrius in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and will be singing Sam in their upcoming performance of Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti.

l'Oiseleur des Longchamps in horse-themed recital

French baritone l'Oiseleur des Longchamps
When we released this year's Barihunks calendar, we were instantly bombarded with questions about French baritone l'Oiseleur des Longchamps. His provocative image caught the eye of a number of readers, who asked about his name and amazing body (which he shows off liberally!).

Longchamps is a multifaceted artist, who has a love for photography and being photographed, as well as music and theater. He's also quite the hippophile (or lover of horses) and he's put together a fascinating concert dedicated to his favorite animal called 'Les chevauchées Lyriques" (Lyric rides). The songs are part of his album of the same name.

Included will be Alagna's "Cantu pi’ n’ cavaddu bravu," Chausson's "Le Chevalier Malheur," Chopin's "Le guerrier," Debussy's "La Belle au bois dormant" and many more.

The concert is on November 22nd at Les salons de la Mèlodie in Brussels. For additional information or to reserve seats, visit the website or send an email to info@lessalonsdelamelodie.com.

Brathwaite takes his Passion to Sweden

Peter Brathwaite (Photo: Maria Scard)
Peter Brathwaite, who has regularly appeared in our Barihunks Charity Calendar, is reprising his performance as Christus in a performance of Bach's St John Passion for Ensemble Arden in Varberg, Sweden. He sang the role last April with the Wren Players as the Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital in London. Tickets to the March 29th performance are available online.

Brathwaite was one of our Reader Submissions in 2011 and we've watched his career flourish. He recorded and toured with the ensemble Amore! and debuted the role of Mimoun in the world première of Emily Howard’s Zátopek.

Peter studied at the Royal College of Music as well as in Belgium and is the recipient of a major award from the Peter Moore’s Foundation and Independent Opera at Sadler's Wells. He has been performing in opera mainly in Belgium, France, Italy and the United Kingdom and appears regularly in recital and on the concert platform.

Erwin Schrott is acting devilish

Erwin Scrott as Mefistofeles
Erwin Schrott has been acting a bit devilish lately and it has nothing to do with his wife Anna Netrebko. He recently wrapped up a run at the budget strapped Liceu opera in Barcelona where they performed a "semi-staged" version of Gounod's "Faust" to save money. The press dubbed it "champagne singers and a beer bottle budget," as he was joined by tenor Piotr Beczala, soprano Krassimira Stoyanova and baritone Ludovic Tezier.

He's now keeping in character as the devil, but switching composers, as he's performing Boito's "Mefistofele" at l'Opéra de Monte Carlo on November 13 and 16. Visit their website for additional information.

Here he is singing "Le veau d’or" from Faust in Barcelona:

Here is the Act 1 duet with Piotr Beczala, also from Barcelona:

Support Young Artists with the 2012 Barihunks Calendar

Actual Cover of Barihunks 2012 Calendar

People visit Barihunks for a variety of reasons, mostly to see some hot baritones showing off their vocal and physical gifts. However, the emails that matter most to us are the ones where we've learned that we've made a difference in a young artist's life. We often hear about singers being cast after someone saw and/or heard them on the site. Our favorite email of all-time was this, "Thanks to your site, my mom thinks I'm a big star in opera. Best of all, she doesn't complain about the all the money she's spent on my career anymore."

We strive to keep this site positive and about promoting both opera and careers. If you've written a bitchy post, you've probably noticed that it's been removed. We believe singers work too hard and make too many sacrifices to be attacked on a blog. Many singers know that we frequently show up to support them live in theaters throughout the world.

The most frequent request that we receive is for a Barihunks calendar and we've finally relented and put one together for 2012. We've collected lots of beautiful photos from the 33 of the hottest men in opera for your enjoyment. Many of the singers took the time to have exclusive photos taken just for the calendar.

Consistent with our desire to support young artists, all proceeds from the Barihunks 2012 calendar will go to support either young artist programs or young artists directly.  The only hitch is we haven't decided who will be the beneficiary. We'd like to hear from you. If you know of a training program that deserves our support, please write us at Barihunks@gmail.com and let us know why in 100 words or less. Click on the calendar image to the right to purchase a calendar now.
