Stéphane Degout and Cédric Tiberghien join forces at Wigmore Hall

Stéphane Degout and Cédric Tiberghien
Barihunk Stéphane Degout will join forces with equally sexy accompanist Cédric Tiberghien at Wigmore Hall on January 29th. The two will perform two of Ravel's epic song cycles, Chansons madécasses and the Histoires naturelles. They will also perform some of Poulenc's most notable songs, Le bestiaire, Montparnasse, Hyde Park, Calligrammes, Quatre poèmes de Guillaume, Apollinaire and Banalités.

The duo will be joined by Matteo Cesari on flute and Alexis Descharmes on cello for Chansons madécasses, a collection of three chansons written in 1925 and 1926 for voice, flute, cello and piano. They chansons were originally dedicated to the American musician and philanthropist Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. The composer combined twentieth-century musical experimentation and exoticism with the late nineteenth-century style characteristics present in the vocal elements and instrumentation.

Stéphane Degout performs Chansons madécasses with Alexis Descharmes on cello:

The 1906 song cycle Histoires naturelles is set to five poems by Jules Renard for voice and piano. The cycle was originally dedicated to the mezzo-soprano Jane Bathori, who gave the first performance, accompanied by Ravel at the piano, on January 12, 1907. The chansons are about a peacock, a cricket, a swan, a kingfisher and a guinea fowl. The unusual text of the pieces created a bit of a controversy at the opening performance.

Both song cycles are generally performed by either baritone or mezzo-soprano.

The French composer Francis Poulenc composed songs throughout his career, with his most prolific output in the 1930s and 1940s. He took most of his texts from his favorite poets, who included Guillaume Apollinaire, Paul Éluard, Jean Cocteau, Max Jacob, and Louise de Vilmorin. His songs have been praised for how the melodic line perfectly matches the text.

Timothy McDevitt to reprise successful Les Mamelles de Tirésias performance

Tim McDevitt in Les Mamelles de Tirésias
Barihunk calendar model Timothy McDevitt will be performing the role of Le Mari in
Francis Poulenc’s first opera Les Mamelles de Tirésias at La Monnaie in Brussels. He'll be sharing performances with Jean-Jacques L'Anthoën. The production runs from January 16-19.

Les Mamelles de Tirésias, was composed during the Second World War and was based on a surrealist play of the same name by Guillaume Apollinaire. This production revives the arrangement for two pianos Benjamin Britten wrote in close collaboration with Poulenc, a version of the score that has not been played ever since its creation in 1958. By mixing dance and singing, the director Ted Huffman, together with young singers, reveals the poetic madness of this work.

You can check out this short film that was done for the European Network of Opera Academies and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence by Claudia Lee.

We contacted La Monnaie to see if Les Mamelles de Tirésias would be broadcast like their other operas, which you can view for three weeks after the performance. Unfortunately, they said that at this time there are no plans to broadcast the performance. We seriously hope that they reconsider.  Being able to watch their recent production of Thomas' Hamlet with Stephane Degout was a beautiful gift to the world of opera.

Michael Weyandt to perform with Summer of Song Series

Michael Weyandt
Our most recent post about German barihunk Martin Häßler ended with a notice about his upcoming debut recital at Wigmore Hall in London. The concert features works by Schubert, Wolf and Finzi. So imagine our surprise when the next day our inbox included a notice for American barihunk Michael Weyandt's upcoming recital with the "Summer of Song Series" in New York featuring works by Schubert, Wolf and Finzi.

The recitals do feature mostly different works by the two singers, except for Wolf's Begegnung
and An eine Aeolsharfe. Häßler will be performing Mussorgsky and Weyandt will have music by Bolcom, Poulenc, Fujimoto and Lehrer.

Heinrich Schlusnus sings Hugo Wolf's "Begegnung":

Weyandt's recital will be on on Thursday, June 20 at 7pm at Opera America (330 7th Avenue) and will feature accompanist Thomas Muraco. Matthew Morris the latest hot Le Mari in Les Mamelles de Tiresias

Matthew Morris (center) with members of the Britten-Pears Young Artists Program
Once again, Poulenc's one-act opera-bouffe Les Mamelles de Tiresias is providing us great material for the site. This time it's 2012 Barihunks calendar model Matthew Morris in the pivotal role of Le Mari. He's performing the opera at the Aldeburgh Festival in a piano arrangement by Benjamin Britten and performed by the Britten-Pears Young Artists. Two of the greatest living accompanists, Malcolm Martineau and Roger Vignoles, are featured at the piano.

There is one remaining performance on Sunday, October 21 remaining and tickets are available HERE

Morris can next be seen at Le théâtre de Caen in France this November where he will be performing in a double bill of Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti and Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges. Visit their website for additional cast and performance information.

"Oh, Towel Boy!": Jonathan Estabrooks in Les Mamelles de Tirésias

Jonathan Estabrooks in Les Mamelles de Tirésias
We recently featured a post about Canadian barihunk Jonathan Estabrooks, who was getting ready to perform the role of Le Mari  in Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tirésias with the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute in Montreal. Poulenc's opera has been challenging Pearl Fishers, Billy Budd and Don Giovanni for the most pictures of shirtless baritones and we're loving it!

Estabrooks' performance at the Salle Claude-Champagne of l’Université de Montréal was no exception. Dressed in exactly one towel more than Gabriel Bermudez in his Full Monty performance, Estabrooks is a welcome addition to the Les Mamelles de Tirésias family of barihunks.

Estabrooks turned some heads when he appeared shirtless in the 2012 Barihunks Charity Calendar, prompting one soprano to email us, "Who knew?" Estabrooks will also appear in the 2013 Calendar, which should be available for purchase in mid-September.

You can join his Facebook Fan Page at ttp://www.facebook.com/estabrooksbaritone

Jonathan Estabrooks to perform "Les Mamelles de Tirésias"

Jonathan Estabrooks
"Les Mamelles de Tirésias" is one of the most viewed operas on Barihunks mainly because of the Full Monty performance of Gabriel Bermudez. The opera has become increasingly popular in recent years, including recent performances at the Central City Opera with Daniel Belcher and Long Beach Opera with Robin Buck.

The famous Emilio Sagi production with Gabriel Bermudez;

The latest barihunk to take on the opera is Jonathan Estabrooks, who will be performing the role of Le Mari with the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute in Montreal. The performance will be at the Salle Claude-Champagne of l’Université de Montréal on August 15th. The performance will be staged with two pianos.

Les Mamelles de Tirésias (The Breasts of Tiresias) is a surrealist two-act opéra bouffe by Francis Poulenc, based on the play of the same title by Guillaume Apollinaire, which was written in 1903 but first performed in 1917. The opera closes with the stern command, "Ô Français, faites des enfants!" ("O Frenchmen, make babies!"), and the success of this propaganda is perhaps seen in the fact that the first two sopranos cast in the role of Tiresias had to give it up before the premiere on account of pregnancy.

Francois Le Roux sings Poulenc

Francois LeRoux
The early results of our latest poll show that Francis Poulenc is the favorite French composer of Barihunks readers. Francois LeRoux, who we featured in yesterday's Bastille Day post, has dedicated himself to preserving French song. In August, his Académie Francis Poulenc will a ten day exploration of French song focusing on Poulenc, Charles Bordes, Emmanuel Chabrier and Henri Dutilleux.

Francois Le Roux
Here is Le Roux performing Poulenc's 1948 song-cycle Calligramme based on seven poems by Guillaume Apollinaire.

UPDATE: A reader asked if it's true that Francois Le Roux was the first male opera singer to appear completely nude onstage. We believe that to be true. He stripped off his clothes in Birtwistle's "Gawain" and had buckets of blood poured over his body. There is a pirate DVD of the opera if anyone is interested.
