Barihunks heat up Des Moines Opera's Summer Season

Brent Michael Smith in Orphée et Eurydice
One of our favorite summer opera festival's recently kicked off, as the Des Moines Metro Opera kicked off their 44th season with a number of barihunks in the cast. Last season, we even featured a barihunk group photo from their production of Puccini's La fanciulla del West, which made our 2015 Best of Barihunks feature in addition to Brad Baron, who was an apprentice artist with the company and our Best Twitter discovery of the year (@BaronAsInRed).

This summer, the company is featuring full-scale operas along with a black box production. The full-scale productions are Verdi’s Falstaff, Massenet’s Manon and Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice, which will be running until July 17th at the Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola Iowa. The black box opera will be Philip Glass’ Galileo Galileo, which will be performed on July 7 and 10 at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines.

Edward Parks sings Ford's aria from Verdi's Falstaff:

We can always rely on the company featuring some of the most talented barihunks on the scene and this season is no exception, as Verdi’s Falstaff will feature Wayne Tigges in the title role and Edward Parks, a recent Operalia finalist, in his debut as Ford. The gifted soprano Kelly Kaduce will sing the role of Alice Ford. Massenet’s Manon will feature the rising young talent Michael Adams making his debut as Lescaut and Troy Cook taking on de Brétigny. While none of three main characters in Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice are baritones, the cast includes the hot young bass Brent Michael Smith as one of the Furies. The rest of the cast includes Jennifer Johnson Cano in the title role, soprano Susannah Biller as Eurydice and Honorary Barihunk Cree Carrico as Amor. Philip Glass’ Galileo Galilei will feature Troy Cook as the Younger Galileo.

DMMO young artists Nate Mattingly, Brent Michael Smith & Charles Eaton
There are a number of baritones and basses in the Des Moines Opera Appretice Artist Program this season, including Tyler Alessi, Joshua Conyers, Charles Eaton, Reuben Lillie, Brent Michael Smith, Spencer Reichman, Nate Mattingly, Connor McDonald, Ben Schaeffer and Reuben Walker.  The young artists will be performing scenes on July 8, 13 and 16.

We are thrilled that Brent Michael Smith will appear in our 10th Anniversary "Barihunks in Bed" calendar. He can next be seen back at the Michigan Opera Theater, where he is a young artist. From October 15-23 he'll be singing Zuniga alongside the Morales of fellow barihunk Harry Greenleaf in Bizet's Carmen. From November 12-20, he appears as the British Major in Kevin Puts' Silent Night alongside fellow barihunk Gabriel Preisser's Lt. Gordon and tenor Chad Johnson's Nikolaus Sprink. Tickets for all performances can be found online.

We plan on featuring some of the DMMO young artists and we'll start with Charles H. Eaton, who recently received his Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota.  In his second year of studies, he was a participant of the ECCO Program, which facilitates hours of coaching and exchange between promising young artists in the School of Music and the music staff at Minnesota Opera.  Charles will cover Lescaut in Des Moines Metro Opera's production of Manon and participate in the chorus of Falstaff as an apprentice artist.  He is a Rocky Mountain District winner of the 2016 Metropolitan Council Auditions.

Silent Night to air on PBS

Liam Bonner in Silent Night
The barihunk-laden production of Kevin Puts’ Silent Night from the Minnesota Opera will be broadcast nationally on PBS on Friday, December 13 at 9pm ET (check local listings). The opera was the first commission of Minnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative, a landmark program designed to invigorate the operatic repertoire with an infusion of contemporary works.

The Minnesota Opera presented the world premiere of Silent Night in November 2011 with a cast that included barihunks Craig Irvin as Lieutenant Horstmayer, Gabriel Preisser as Lieutenant Gordon,  Mike Nyby as William Dale, Liam Bonner as Lieutenant Audebert, Troy Cook as Father Palmer, Joseph Beutel as the British Major, Ben Wager as the General and Andrew Wilkowske as Ponchel.

Silent Night is conducted by Minnesota Opera’s Music Director Michael Christie and staged by Academy Award-winning director Eric Simonson. The opera was recently honored with a regional Emmy nomination.

Quartet from Silent Night:

Silent Night was co-produced with Opera Philadelphia, who presented the work in February of this year. It now travels to the Fort Worth Opera Festival on May 4 and 10 with barihunks Dan Kempson, Craig Irvin and Morgan Smith.

The opera is based on the screenplay Joyeux Noël by Christian Carion and recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. On WWI’s western front, Scottish, French and German officers defy their superiors and negotiate a Christmas Eve truce. Enemies become brothers as they share Christmas and bury their dead.

You can listen to the entire opera online at composer Kevin Puts' website.

Listen to Kevin Puts' "Silent Night" on NPR

Mike Nyby
We've covered composer Kevin Puts' Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night extensively in its performances in Minneapolis and Philadelphia. You can plan on more coverage as it heads to Fort Worth Opera and elsewhere in the opera world as this barihunk-laden opera quickly enters the standard repertory. Not since Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking have we seen a new opera take the music world by storm like this.

The opera was originally commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and is based on the screenplay by Christian Carion for the Oscar-nominated 2005 French film Joyeux Nöel, which dramatized actual events during WWI during the days before Christmas 1914. The opera which deals with French, Scottish and German soldiers enjoying a truce during the bloody war is sung in German, French, English, Italian and Latin.

Liam Bonner sings Lieutenant Audebert's "J'ai perdu ta photo" from Silent Night:

National Public Radio (NPR) has posted the audio of the orginal performance from the Minnesota Opera, which included a slew of barihunks. They include Craig Irvin as Lieutenant Horstmayer, Michael Nyby as William Dale, Troy Cook as Father Palmer, Gabriel Preisser as Lieutenant Gordon,
Joseph Beutel as the British Major, Liam Bonner as Lieutenant Audebert, Andrew Wilkowske as Ponchel and Ben Wager as the General.

North Carolina Opera announces barihunky new season

A well-dressed Soloman Howard and an undressed Troy Cook in Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias
North Carolina Opera has announced their new season and it includes some of our favorite singers. Anytime an opera company produces Puccini's La boheme, odds are that at least one of the three baritones will be a barihunk. The company has not announced their Schaunard, but we're thrilled that Troy Cook will appear as Marcello and Soloman Howard as Colline. Cook, you may recall is one of six singers who have appears on this site in the "full monty." Performances are on January 24 & 26, 2014.
Sidney Outlaw
Mozart's Così fan tutte will feature the ridiculously talented and brilliant Sydney Outlaw as Guglielmo. You can see the Brevard, North Carolina native in performances on October 3, 5 & 6, 2013. Fans in New York can catch him on November 4th at Carnegie Hall performing Mendelssohn's Walpurgisnacht & Mozart Requiem. He'll also be making his debut with the Atlanta Opera next year as Figaro in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Their final offering is Antonín Dvorák's magical opera Rusalka. Although this isn't a barihunk vehicle, it does include two rising soprano talents who you won't want to miss: future Wagnerian mega-star Heidi Melton and Joyce El-Khoury. There is one performance scheduled on March 14, 2014.

North Carolina Opera was formed in 2010 from the merger of Capital Opera Raleigh and The Opera Company of North Carolina. Visit their website for tickets and additional cast information.

Acclaimed "Silent Night" to open in Philadelphia with an army of barihunks

Regular readers might recall that we generously covered the debut of Kevin Puts' Pulitzer Prize-winning opera "Silent Night," when it premiered at the Minnesota Opera in 2011.  It featured a veritable army of barihunks including Troy Cook, Gabriel Preisser, Ben Wager, Michael Nyby and Craig Irvin, all of whom posed for a picture that we posted [see below].

Five of the barihunks from that production are reprising their roles at Opera Philadelphia opening on February 8th and running through February 17th. They include Craig Irvin as Lieutenant Horstmayer, the German commanding officer; baritone Liam Bonner as Lieutenant Audebert, the conflicted French commander and his aide-de-camp Ponchel sung by Andrew Wikowske; baritone Gabriel Preisser as Lieutenant Gordon; and, Troy Cook as Father Palmer.

Troy Cook, Gabriel Preisser, Ben Wager, Michael Nyby and Craig Irvin
Tenor William Burden stars as the drafted opera singer whose voice inspires peace among adversaries and soprano Kelly Kaduce as his love interest, Anna Sørenson. Kaduce also happens to be married to a barihunk in real life, Lee Gregory.

Liam Bonner sings Lieutenant Audebert's "J'ai perdu ta photo"

Silent Night, which is based on the 2005 French film Joyeux Noel, recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history.   On World War I’s western front, weapons are laid down when Scottish, French and German officers defy their superiors and negotiate a Christmas Eve truce. Enemies become brothers as they come together to share Christmas and bury their dead.

Tickets and additional information is available online.

Also in 2014, the Fort Worth Opera Festival will give the regional premiere of the opera.

Video: Daniel Okulitch's Nude Scene from "The Fly"

Daniel Okulitch goes "The Full Okulitch" (Screenshot from Arte)
According to our Google Analytics, two of our most popular posts of all-time continue to be those of Gabriel Bermudez appearing nude in Poulenc's  "Les mamelles de Tirésias" and Daniel Okultich appearing nude in Howard Shore's "The Fly." Until now, we've only had pictures and no video. But thanks to a European broadcast of the opera, we now have some video to share of the scene that prompted fellow barihunks Michael Mayes and Michael Todd Simpson on the Texapolitan Opera podcast to coin the phrase "The Full Okulitch" to describe a full-frontal nude scene in opera.

The Canadian barihunk can next be heard in recital at the Glenn Gould Studio on December 4th in Toronto. You can check out his profile on the CBC website where you can also listen to him discuss his status as a barihunk.

We also highly recommend that you add Okulitch's wonderful recital "The New American Art Song" to your CD collection. You can purchase it at the GPR Records website

For the record, the only other barihunk to appear on this site other than Bermudez and Okulitch performing "The Full Okulitch" is Troy Cook. We should use this opportunity to point out that we only publish nudity if it was performed on stage. We have pictures of Leigh Melrose from "Riders to the Sea" and Laurent Alvaro from the French production of "The Fly," but felt the quality wasn't good enough to post. We also hear that there are photos of Eugene Brancoveanu from "Little Caesar," but we've never found them.

To see the entire season with cast and production information, visit the Opera Company of Philadelphia website.

Fans of Cook can now visit the artist's new website, which includes audio/video, performance schedules and photos.

Below you can watch Troy Cook in another Puccini opera as he joins tenor James Valenti in singing the glorious tenor/baritone duet from La Boheme "O, Mimi tu piu non torni" from the Florida Grand Opera.

Barihunk Breakout in Philly

Troy Cook performs in Philly (Ryan Collerd - The New York Times)
Troy Cook, who is one of only three barihunks to appear "The Full Okulitch" on this site was recently part of a New York Times article on the latest hot trend in opera, "Random Acts of Culture." These "spontaneous" public breakouts of opera have recently occurred at the Ferry Building in San Francisco, London's train stations, New York City and even Akron, Ohio.

Here is a video of Cook's performance at Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market where he is joined by fellow barihunks Norman Garrett and Daniel Mobbs. If anyone doesn't believe that music is good for the soul, check out the sheer joy on the faces of the people watching. They sure look happier than Phillies or Eagles fans.

Top 10 Barihunks

We decided to check Google Analytics to see who you've looking at on Barihunks over the last 120 days. We discovered a few surprises, like perennial favorites Mariusz Kwiecien and Teddy Tahu Rhodes missing from the list. There were also a couple of young, emerging singers high on the list and they are both named Zach: Zach Altman and Zach Gordin. We were also surprised to see that Nathan Gunn dropped out of his usual perch among the top five. There was one consistent theme, readers like to see a little skin. Here's the Top 10 in order of page views:

1. Gabriel Bermudez

2. Quirijn de Lang

3. Daniel Okulitch

4. Zach Altman

5. Zach Gordin

6. Troy Cook

7. Nmon Ford

8. Nathan Gunn

9. Paulo Szot

Gabriel Bermudez sings "Dieux protecteurs" from Gluck's "Iphigénie en Tauride"

The posts of Gabriel Bermudez and Troy Cook taking "full monty" showers in a production of Poulenc's "Les mamelles de Tirésias" has created quite a bit of extra traffic to Barihunks. It also has generated a lot of email asking for more. We have some additional photos that we'll post in the future of both singers. In the meantime, here is an amazing video of Gabriel Bermudez singing one of the most beautiful arias in the baritone repertoire (and showing some skin!).

...and one last teaser of the hottest backside in opera.

Troy Cook's Revealing Debut

We can't think of a better way for a singer to debut on Barihunks than to reveal his total package. In the case of Troy Cook, we literally mean the total package. We always comment that Don Giovanni is the opera that just keeps cranking out the barihunks, but perhaps for those of you want to see ALL of your barihunks, Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias might be the opera of choice.

After we posted Gabriel Bermudez's full monty a reader alerted us to the fact that Troy Cook performed in the same production. He was also gracious enough to dig up this amazing photo. When Bermudez's photos were posted on our site, traffic increased 500% and rivaled the photos of Daniel Okulitch from The Fly in total hits.

However, this site is dedicated to great singing, as well as pulchritudinous men. Clearly, Cook and Bermudez both fit the bill.

American baritone Troy Cook is a former apprentice artist the Santa Fe Opera, student at the  Florida Grand Opera Studio and holds a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. He also studied voice with Bill Schuman.

We've included a couple of clips of Cook, including a performance of Marcello at the Florida Grand Opera’s La Boheme and a duet from Pagliacci with soprano Lotania Moore. Cook has also performed in a few Barihunks favorites, portraying Zurga in the Pearl Fishers and Mr. Flint in Billy Budd.

Cook is scheduled to perform Figaro in Kansas City and Zurga in Philadelphia in upcoming seasons. He is also scheduled to do a recording of Donizetti's music with Opera Rara in 2011. We look forward to seeing a lot more of this talented young singer in the future.
