Maija Kovalevska: Luckiest Woman in the World

Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska had to be the luckiest woman in the world when director Stephan Kimmig called for her to be "hunk handled" by both Erwin Schrott and Alex Esposito at the Bavarian State Opera. This performance was from October 2009 and it returns next month with Mariusz Kwiecien as Don Giovanni and Alex Esposito returning as Leporello. Maija Kovalevska returns as Donna Elvira - and who could blame her.

  2. Kwiecien opened the production in October 09. Schrott sang in the spring. Kwiecien and Alex Esposito wore black suits in this scene. I wonder if Kwiecien will switch to these white jeans which look so good on Schrott . . .

  3. I think that we should have a "big package" contest between Schrott and Kwiecien. They both like to show off their goods.

  4. WTF does this staging have to do with this aria? Fine, he can "bulge," but a staging truer to Mozart would be better. If you're in doubt, just read the dialogue preceding the aria. Sometimes, subtle is sexier. Refer to the production with Simon Keenlyside, conducted by Abbado. (I think you've posted it before.)

  5. I agree with anonymous, this staging seems to have been done to show Erwin's erection... I think Schrott should learn how to fit his sex-appeal to serious opera.
