Brett Carter to set himself on fire after wrapping up sexy Valentin in Mainz

Brett Carter as Valentin in Gounod's Faust
We've posted about Aussie barihunk Brett Carter's sexy Valentin in Gounod's Faust (Margerete) before. He is down to his last two performances on January 17 and February 14th at the Staatstheater in Mainz, where he is a member of the ensemble. You can get tickets and additional cast information online.

On March 11th, he'll open in Pascal Dusapin's Perelà with the amazing tenor Peter Tantsits in the title role. Perelà tells the story of the mysterious "man of smoke" who appears in an unnamed city, and charts his rise and fall through a series of tragicomic encounters with its inhabitants. The opera does include male nudity for the tenor. Carter sings the role of the old valet Alloro, who sets himself on fire hoping to emulate the lightness of Perelà.

On December 26th and January 19th, he'll be singing Orff's Carmina Burana in Mainz with soprano Marie-Christine Haase and countertenor Alin Deleanu. In July, he returns to his native Australia where he''ll sing the title role in Rossini's The Barber of Seville at the Queensland Performing Arts Center.

You can hear Carter sing excerpts from Faust, Carmina Burana and The Barber of Seville on his website.

Carter studied Classical Guitar and Voice at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He then became a member of the Australian Opera Studio where his roles included Mozart’s Conte Almaviva, Don Giovanni and Britten’s Tarquinius. After receiving a Scholarship to participate in the Cincinnati Music Festival in Lucca, Italy, he then went on to become a Young Artist with Opera Queensland. Richard Alexandre Rittelman in Carmina Burana at UNESCO site

Richard Alexandre Rittelmann
German-Hungarian barihunk Richard Alexandre Rittelmann, who is now based in France, recently completed a photo shoot for the 2015 Barihunks Charity Calendar, which is themed "Viva, Italia!" The above photo is just a headshot teaser for some amazingly hot pictures that will be featured in May of the new calendar.

On August 24, Richard Alexandre Rittelmann will be appearing in one of his signature role, the baritone part of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. This performance will be an adaptation for chamber music scored for two pianos, percussion, a 40-person chorus and soloists. During the performance, video images will be projected onto the walls. Tickets are available online.

This will be Rittelmann's sixth performance of the work, having performed in twice in Paris, with Michel Plasson in Nimes, under the baton of Bernard Tetu in Lyon and with Marco Guidarini in Nice.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vauban's masterpiece, the Besançon Citadel, is considered to be one of the finest in France. The Citadel houses three award-winning museums behind its ramparts, the Museum of French Resistance and Deportation, the Franche-Comté Museum and the Natural History Museum.

Barihunks is currently taking new submissions for the 2015 Barihunks Charity Calendar. The calendar will feature Italian and Italian-American singers, as well as non-Italian singers in Italian themed photos. Submissions should be sent to Barihunks@gmail.com and must be received by September 21st. All proceeds will once again go to support young artists.

Andrew Garland in Pagliacci/Carmina Burana and World Premiere

Andrew Garland
We've been huge fans of American barihunk Andrew Garland since the beginning of his career. We realized the true extent of his amazing artistry with the release of his CD American Portraits on GPR Records. Garland keeps his incredible body in shape by running and biking (and apparently some weight lifting, as well).

He opened last night at the Hawaii Opera in a double-bill of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci and Orff's Carmina Burana. Garland is performing both Silvio in Pagliacci and the baritone solo in Carmina Burana. He's joined by the talented young soprano Elizabeth Caballero, who is singing Nedda. There are two performances remaining, a matinee on March 30 and an evening performance on April 1st. Tickets are available online. If the video of Garland singing Estuans Interius from Carmina Burana is any indication, it should be an incredible performance.

If you can't get away to the island paradise to catch Garland, you can hear him on April 13th in Easton, Pennsylvania where he will be the soloist in the world premiere of composer Gabriela Lena Frank's Songs of Cifar and the Sweet Sea composed for the Lafayette Choirs and featuring the Chiara String Quartet.

She wrote the music to texts by the Nicaraguan poet Pablo Antonio Cuadra (1912-2002). As a young man, Cuadra spent more than two decades sailing the waters of Lake Nicaragua, meeting peasants, fishermen, sailors, woodcutters, and timber merchants in his travels. From such encounters, he was inspired to construct a cycle of poems that recount the odyssey of a harp-playing mariner, Cifar, who likewise travels the waters of Lake Nicaragua.

The concert is free to the public and it's only a 90 minute drive from New York City or Philadelphia.

Zachary Gordin to kick off Olympic Music Festival

Barihunk Zachary Gordin

Popular barihunk calendar model Zachary Gordin will be performing this weekend at the bucolic Olympic Music Festival, located on a turn-of-the-century dairy farm located on 55 acres of tranquil farmland on Washington state's beautiful Olympic Peninsula.

The singer, who is based in the San Francisco Bay area and performs regularly with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, will be performing Robert Schumann’s “Dichterliebe,” Franz Liszt’s “Liebestraume” and the “Chansons Grises” by Reynaldo Hahn. His program is entitled “Songs and Dances of Love," but from the emails that we receive about the bodybuilding singer, he may want to rename it “Songs and Dances of Lust."

Zachary Gordin sings "Estuans interius" from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana

After Gordin kicks off the festival, concerts will continue every Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM now through September 1st. The concerts take place on hay-bale seating inside a barn with picnicking encouraged on the lawn outside.

Advance tickets to the Olympic Music Festival are $30 for adults for barn seating; $28 for seniors 62 and older and $18 for youth age 7 to 17. At the gate on concert day, those prices go up $3. For lawn seating, there are no advance sales; tickets at the gate are $20 for adults, $14 for youth and free for children 6 and younger.

Visit the Olympic Music Festival online for additional program information.

Michael Kelly & Nicolas McGegan Team Up For Carmina Burana

Michael Kelly
We're not sure what they're putting in that luscious Midwest corn, but it apparently it's making people pine for Orff's Carmina Burana. We recently posted about barihunk Dan Kempson singing Orff's masterpiece with the Wichita Symphony. Now we've learned that just up the road in Kansas City, barihunk Michael Kelly will be performing the same piece on the same dates.

As an added bonus, Kelly will be performing with the energetic conductor Nic McGegan. We can't think of a better maestro to lead this lively score. If you can't make it to K.C. for this performance, make sure to buy McGegan's new CD of Handel's Atalanta.

Nic McGegan
Carmina Burana will be performed on Friday, November 16 through Sunday, November 18 and will be paired with Haydn's Symphony No. 94 in G major ( “Surprise”). Tenor Mark Molomot and soprano Cynthia Sieden will sing the other roles. Tickets for all three performances are available online

Actor Clancy O'Connor & Barihunk Michael Kelly will appear together
Fans of Kelly in New York can see him in Tribeca at SongFusion's Fall Gala featuring actor Clancy O'Connor. Kelly will be performing songs by New York composers about gay life in NY from SongFusion's upcoming program NY NOW! Gay Words/Gay Music. Tickets for the gala are available online

David Adam Moore takes on Carmina Burana and Silvio at New Orleans Opera

David Adam Moore as he appeared in the Barihunks Calendar

We've always found Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" a somewhat sexy piece of music with its songs about the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust. With that in mind, having sexy barihunk David Adam Moore sing the baritone part seems like dream casting. Moore will be performing a fully-staged version of Carmina Burana, as well as Silvio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci with the New Orleans Opera opening tonight.

This is the first time that the New Orleans Opera is producing Carmina Burana and they are going all out. They will be joined by the New Orleans Ballet Theatre along with the combined choral forces of the New Orleans Opera Chorus, Loyola University Chorus and the New Orleans Vocal Arts Chorale in what promises to be a spectacular show. There will be a second performance on Sunday, April 29, so if you're anywhere in the area, click HERE for a ticket.

Bernd Weikl sings Estuans Interius from Carmina Burana:

Moore will play the "other man" in Pagliacci opposite the Russian-born, American-raised soprano Inna Dukach. Here is an interview with Moore conducted by New Orleans Opera Executive Director Timothy Todd Simmons. You can hear about his "other career" in the visual arts, his country music roots and his upcoming recording of "Soldier Songs," which we've featured on the site:

Dominik Köninger Dresses Down for Bach

Dominik Köninger as Jesus ( Foto: Johanna Sterner)
We love our readers for a million reasons, but mostly for the great photos that they send to us. Our best material comes from our readers, like this picture of Dominik Köninger perfoming Jesus in director Tobias Kratzer's current production of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion (Johannespassionen) at the Värmland Opera in Karlstad, Sweden. The production also includes barihunk Johan Rydh as Pilatus and runs every Saturday until April 8th.

Köninger's career has taken off since he won First Prize at the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition last year. On April 15-16, he joins conductor Christopher Hogwood, the Limburg Cathedral Boys Choir and the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra for performances of Mozart’s version of Handel’s Ode to St. Cecilia.

This year, Köninger will join the ensemble of Komische Oper Berlin in Berlin, where he will perform Guglielmo, Il Conte, Orfeo and Orest in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride. In 2013, he makes his debut as Guglielmo in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at New National Theatre in Tokyo.

Dominik Köninger sings Mozart's "Hai gia vinta la causa":

Köninger also just released his first recording, a performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana in the version for two pianos and percussion on SONY Classical. We've also learned about another proposed recording project that we'll post when have additional information.

Michael Todd Simpson in Carmen & Messiah; Pop's Sexy Carmina Burana; Varnier in Rimini

Anita Rachvelishvili as Carmen & Michael Todd Simpson as Escamillo in rehearsal; (Bill Mohn, photo)
Michael Todd Simpson brought his swaggering Escamillo to Seattle Opera for their performances of Bizet's "Carmen." In a performance that included the riveting Carmen of Anita Rachvelishvili and a host of other hot men, the American barihunk managed to catch the attention of reviewer Jackson Holtz at the Everett Herald.
"Seattle Opera veteran Michael Todd Simpson was sexy and charming as the matador."
You can read the entire review at the Everett HeraldNet website.

Bernard Jacobson of the Seattle Times wrote:
"Don José...projected just the nebbish air of indecision that makes José putty in Carmen's hands — no competition for the sexy Escamillo and Zuniga of Michael Todd Simpson and Donovan Singletary."
Donovan Singletary in his Barihunks tee shirt

Performances run through October 29th and tickets can be purchased online. Simpson next heads down the coast to California, where he will perform Handel's "Messiah" with the amazing San Francisco Symphony. Performances are on December 16, 17 & 18. Visit the San Francisco Symphony website for tickets and additional performance information.

By the way, if you haven't seen the Seattle Opera's "If Carmen and her friends were on Facebook...," then you missed one of the funniest and creative things that we've ever seen from an Opera Company (that was meant to be funny!). You can see the entire post on their wonderful blog.

Kudos to the Seattle Opera, which continues to be one of the most creative opera companies in the world.

Cirque du Soleil performers and Marian Pop combine forces in Detroit

The Michigan Opera Theater hired some Cirque du Soleil acrobats to add an erotic touch to Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." The piece was part of a double-bill with Menotti's "The Medium." Barihunk Marian Pop, a regular fixture with the opera company, was singled out for his performance by the local press.
"Baritone soloist Marian Pop's expressive singing was the musical highlight of "Carmina."
You can read the entire review at the Detroit Free Press website.

Jérôme Varnier
Jérôme Varnier is wrapping up a run as Palémon in Massenet's "Thaïs" tonight at the Opéra de Tours. He now heads to the Opéra-Théâtre de Metz to perform Guido in Ambroise Thomas' "Francesca da Rimini," which opens on November 18. Tickets and additional performance information are available online.

Rehearsal Footage From "A Quiet Place" at NYCO

Performances of Leonard Bernstein's "A Quiet Place" still has five performances remaining at New York City Opera. Tickets and performance information are available at the New York City Opera website.

Louis Otey and Joshua Hopkins, who have both appeared on this site are in the cast, as is Patricia Risley in the critical role of Dinah. We mention Risley, because she is the wife of barihunk Keith Phares, who just received rave reviews in Orff's "Carmina Burana" with the San Francisco Symphony.
