R.I.P Glen Roven (1958-2018): Composer, Conductor, Arranger, Producer, Two-time Emmy Award-winner

Glen Roven
The Barihunks family lost one of its favorite people in the music industry this week, Glen Roven, a multi-talented composer, conductor, arranger, producer and two-time Emmy Award-winner. He was a fan of our site from day one and always dreamed of producing a barihunk concert, which he recently accomplished when he joined Steven Labrie, Jarrett Ott and Tobias Greenhalgh at Carnegie Hall.

Roven was a tireless promoter of music across all genres, including for his beloved friend Florence Henderson, as well as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Julie Andrews, Melissa Etheridge, Aretha Franklin, Leon Fleisher, Kenny G., Whitney Houston, Dick Hyman, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Kermit the Frog, Patti LaBelle, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, Paul Shaffer, Martin Short, TRAIN and others.

His collection of three-dozen song cycles and art songs are performed all around in the world, including concerts by Daniel Okulitch, who would devote a half-program to his music and Mark Stone who performed an all-Roven set at Carnegie Hall. He loved translating great works into English and wrote a version of Schubert's Winterreise for David Adam Moore and had his English version of Mahler's Kindertodenlieder performed by Christopher Herbert. Randal Turner made his West Coast recital debut singing Roven's "Four Melancholy Songs, Opus 16, No. 1" based on poetry by William Butler Yeats. The list is endless, which is a testament to his prolific abilities.

Daniel Okulitch recorded "Stop all the Clocks" from Roven's "Songs From the Underground," based on Auden's famous poem in 2011. However, Roven could never perform the piece again after his partner Robin died as he got too emotional. You can listen to Okulitch and Roven perform it HERE.

When we met with Roven in New York in 2015, he was about to premiere Songs That Make Grown Men Cry, Opus 41, based on texts from a collection of poetry edited by Anthony Holden and Ben Holden. The concert featured barihunks Jonathan Hare, Kenneth Kellogg and Jarrett Ott along with the NY New Music Collective and tenors Andrew Fuchs, Glen Seven Allen and Myles Mykkanen and a choral quartet. He would tear up whenever talking about the text.

Speaking of text, Roven had an undying love and devotion to poetry, and produced "Poetic License: 100 Poems/100 Performers," which became the best selling poetry album of all time.  The album included readings by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Patti LuPone, Jason Alexander, Cynthia Nixon, Florence Henderson, Christine Baranski, Brent Barrett, Barry Humphries, Daniel Okulitch, Tyne Daly, Doug Carpenter and Glenn Seven Allen.

After the election of Donald Trump, the composer needed a way to channel is anger, so he wrote The Hillary Speeches, based on the announcement of her candidacy on January 7, 2007, and her presidential concession speech on November 9, 2017. The concert was streamed from the National Sawdust and included performances by David Adam Moore, Kyle Ketelsen, Nathan Gunn, Sidney Outlaw, Daniel Sumegi, Lester Lynch, Andrew Garland, Michael Kelly, Isabel Leonard, Patricia Racette, Lawrence Brownlee, Matthew Polenzani, Carin Gilfy, Laquita Mitchell, Glenn Seven Allen, Dominic Armstrong, Jonathan Blalock and others.

Roven also tirelessly devoted his time to penning music for charitable causes, including "An AIDS Quilt Songbook: Sing for Hope," a recording that raised funds for amfAR and featured Joyce DiDonato, Jamie Barton, Isabel Leonard, Matthew Polenzani, Susanne Phillips Yo-Yo Ma, Ansel Elgort, Sharon Stone and others.

One of our favorite compositions by Roven is a setting of wine tasting notes that was written for bass Aaron Sorensen and performed in California's Sonoma County wine region.

Roven was always busy doing something, and at the time of his death, he was at work on a new movie-musical for Dolly Parton for Netflix, had just completed his "Symphony of Songs," penned a new opera called Addressee Unknown, wrote a new Broadway Musical World War Me, and produced an all-Verdi aria CD for Hui He.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 27th at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street in New York City at 11 AM, with a memorial tribute being planned for Fall 2018.

Daniel Okulitch to make ENO debut in Muhly's Marnie; Perform all-Glen Roven concert

Coverboy Daniel Okulitch and performing The Last Savage
Canadian barihunk Daniel Okulitch is hitting the opera stage and the concert platform in London next month.

On November 18th, he makes his debut with the English National Opera (ENO) as Mark Rutland in the highly anticipated world premiere of Nico Muhly's opera Marnie.  Following his highly-acclaimed opera Two Boys in 2011, this is Muhly’s second world premiere for ENO. Okulitch will be joined by mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and soprano Leslie Garrett.

With a libretto by Nicholas Wright, Marnie is based on the novel by Winston Graham and it examines the cost of freedom, the limitations of forgiveness and the impossibility of escaping the past. Set in 1950s London, the psychological thriller tells the story of a woman who has gone through life embezzling her employers, changing her identity, being forced into a loveless marriage by Okulitch's character, and eventually being forced to confront her past.

Performances run from November 18-December 3 and tickets are available online

Glen Roven and Daniel Okulitch sings "Listening to Jazz Now":

In the middle of his run of Marnie, Okulitch will hit the concert stage on November 22 with mezzo-sopranos Kim Criswell and Lucy Schaufer for an evening dedicated to New York-based composer Glen Roven. Okulitch, who has sung Roven's music in numerous concerts, will perform his Songs from the Underground and his setting of Goodnight Moon

Roven's Songs of the Underground is a 15-song cycle consisting of songs based on texts by Yeats, Shelley, Milton, Whitman, Auden, Wordsworth, and Dylan Thomas. The music moves between classical and musical theater forms depending on the text. Originally written for soprano Lauren Flanigan, Goodnight Moon is one of two settings by Roven based on the children's books (the other being Runaway Bunny).

The recital will be at the 1901 Arts Club and tickets are available online. The concert also includes Two Song by Edna St. Vincent Millay, Saraband from Symphony No.2 and The Hillary Speeches.

Matthew Morris in World Premiere Songs; Part of Barihunk Quartet in Don Giovanni

Matthew Morris
Matthew Morris will be joining the Brooklyn New Music Collective for  for an evening of song cycles, most of them performed for the first time ever. The concert will feature world premieres from James Kallembach, Glen Roven and Roger Stubblefield, plus songs from James Matheson and Steven Gerber. There will be a reception with wine after the show.

Glen Roven told us that his "Four Surreal Songs" were inspired by a visit to the Helly Nahmad Gallery where they were exhibiting a show of surrealist painters -- Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Yves Tanguy and Max Ernst. The catalog featured poems by Paul Éluard in English translations, which Roven decided to set to music.

The October 16th performance will be at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn. Tickets are available online.

Also, don't forget about Morris' upcoming performance as Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni with New York's newest and highly innnovative opera company, Venture Opera.

He'll be joined by Philip Cutlip in the title, Eric Downs as Leporellod and Christian Zaremba will sing the Commendatore. The perfect Barihunk Quartet!

Venture Opera's production of Mozart's Don Giovanni casts the serial seducer as a Catholic priest who abuses his power to have his way with women. Taking place in one of the oldest surviving gothic-revival religious buildings in New York, the adaptation revolves around the theological question of the Act of Contrition.

Performances will be on November 6, 8 and 10 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in the heart of the Lower East Side. Tickets and additional cast information are available online.

Three barihunks to make grown men cry

Jonathan Hare, Kenneth Kellogg & Jarrett Ott (L-R)
Three barihunks will be featured with the NY New Music Collective in an evening of songs by four-time Emmy Award winning composer Glen Roven. Jonathan Hare, Kenneth Kellogg and Jarrett Ott will perform Songs That Make Grown Men Cry Opus 41, based on texts from a collection of poetry edited by Anthony Holden and Ben Holden. They will be joined by tenors Andrew Fuchs, Glen Seven Allen and Myles Mykkanen and a choral quartet.

Roven wrote of the song cycle:
I got in touch with the Holdens and they gave the project their blessing. I knew it would be composed for a group of men, obviously, and I tried to come up with all the permutations possible for two tenors, baritone and bass. Picking the poems was a bit of a challenge; many of the poems had the men “crying” for the same reason: a sense of loss. I thought that would be too brutal for me, so I chose poems that reflected different reasons for the tears: tears of joy, tears of wonder, tears of glory, and of course tears of loss. Also when I started writing, The Death of Klinghoffer was very much in the news and the creators kept insisting their piece was intimately based on Bach’s “St. Matthew’s Passion.” I saw Klinghoffer twice and for the life of me, I couldn’t make sense of that comment. However, it did give me the inspiration to compose chorales in this cycle. There are three: the first and last songs, and the middle song to break up the set.
Also on the program will be internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard singing the composer's Goodnight Moon Opus 17, as well as his  six Ancient Chinese Songs Opus 38, performed by soprano Laura Strickling.

The performance will be at Spectrum in New York City on March 19th at 8:30 PM.

Composer Clint Borzoni (left) and Barihunk Michael Weyandt (right)
The inevitable has occurred with the barihunk craze in opera, as a song dedicated to the phenomenon will receive its world premiere at the National Opera Center in New York City on March 28th.

The song will be part of concert called "Love Affairs," which explores love of self, love of money, lust, and dealing with lost loves. Also featured on the program is soprano Caroline Worra and pianists Jennifer Peterson and Lloyd Arriola.

In addition to the Barihunk Song, the program features the world premiere of Philip Wharton's song cycle "Blooms Remembered," composed to words by Carl Sandburg.

Love Affairs will be performed one night only at 7:30 PM on Saturday, March 28the in the Recital Hall at The National Opera Center, 330 Seventh Avenue, NYC. Tickets are available online at PurplePass. The $20 tickets also includes a reception following the concert.

You can hear Michael Weyandt sing Bolcom's Song of Black Max by clicking HERE.

Clint Borzoni is an award winning composer, and alumnus of programs from American Opera Projects, the American Lyric Theater, and was recently chosen as one of the composers for Fort Worth Opera's Frontiers 2015 Showcase.

Philip Wharton has worked with Santa Fe Opera's apprentice program. Grammy-nominated Borealis Wind Quintet frequently performs his quintet. Recently Albany Records released a recording of his flute sonata.

There is another version of the Barihunk Song set to music by Glen Roven that is expected to be premiered later this year on the West Coast.

Rare Hunkentenor-Bass/Barihunk concert in East Bay

Jonathan Blalock and Aaron Sørensen
One of the recipients of our proceeds from the Barihunks calendar was the team of hunkentenor Jonathan Blalock and Bass-Barihunk Aaron Sørensen, who came up with the novel idea for a concert with this rarely seen vocal combination.

The duo will perform music by George Gershwin, Ricky Ian Gordon, Jake Heggie, Glen Roven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gioacchino Rossini. The performance will be at Duende on Wed., May 21 at 7 PM  in the heart of Oakland's burgeoning arts district, The Uptown. Duende has become a popular destination for aficionados of alternative jazz and they've been eager to expand their musical offerings to include classical music. This will debut what we all hope is a regular feature on their calendar. A stones throw away from Duende is the restored Fox Theater, which features some of the biggest names in the music industry.  Tickets for the Blalock/Sørensen recital are available online.

This recital will also be the West Coast debut for two of the most talked about young artists in opera. Jonathan Blalock received rave notices from the New York Times and Alex Ross in the New Yorker for his riveting performance in Gregory Spears' Paul's Case, which featured barihunk Keith Phares. Aaron Sørensen is the bass voice that the opera world continuously clamors for and he recently appeared as the French General in Fort Worth Opera's production of Kevin Puts' Silent Night.

Efrain Solis in an ad for West Edge Opera
Blalock will be returning to the East Bay this summer in West Edge Opera's production of Philip Glass's Hydrogen Jukebox, featuring barihunk Efrain Solis and bass-barihunk Kenneth Kellogg. You can watch a preview of their exciting and innovative upcoming season above and get more information on their website. If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you'll want to add their summer festival to calendar.

A Birthday Tribute to Randal Turner

Randal Turner
We have a lot of favorite singers on Barihunks, ranging from the mega-stars like Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Mariusz Kwiecien to the upcoming singers like Matthew Morris, Hadleigh Adams and Jonathan Estabrooks. Then there is Randal Turner, who is in that middle ground with his student days behind him and stardom just a big break away.

Despite being from Indiana and attending the esteemed singing program at Indiana University, his career has been primarily in European opera houses. Perhaps it's because he's based in Zurich.

However, we still can't figure out why he's not been engaged by more American companies. We saw his sexually charged and vocally sublime Don Giovanni in Detroit, as well as his debut at New York City Opera in Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna and were incredibly impressed. We've been selling his debut CD on the site, which was his West Coast recital debut and filled with music from America's greatest composers: Jake Heggie, Ricky Ian Gordon, Glen Roven, Clint Borzoni and his fellow Swiss-based American, Julia Schwartz.

We're at a loss why he's not on the schedules of more American opera companies. If any of them are reading this, we're eager to hear him in some early to mid-Verdi, some non-Ring Wagner and some more American or English opera (Billy Budd!). Of course, we won't complain about another Don Giovanni either.

Happy Birthday to one of our favorite singers!

Mark Stone sings Glen Roven's "Shakespeare Songs"

Mark Stone and Daniel Okulitch
One of our favorite song writers at Barihunks is the New York-based composer Glen Roven. He also seems to be the favorite of many actual barihunks, including Randal Turner and Daniel Okulitch, who both included his songs on their recent CD releases. His songs have also been sung in recital and on CD by Morgan Smith, David Adam Moore, Jonathan Beyer and Andrew Garland. Here is a selection of Mark Stone singing his "Shakespeare Songs" from a Carnegie Hall recital on May 19, 2010.

Roven's collection of Shakespeare Songs have just been published and are available at a 15% discount at Bill Holab Music by entering the discount code GRSS-15. [The offer is good until 1/1/2013].

Christopher Johnstone's Sexy New Website: Five Boroughs Music Festival Reminder

Christopher Johnstone: Singer, Actor, Model (and hot!)

We get a lot of messages asking us to look at someone's new website, but we've seldom encountered one as sexy as barihunk Christopher Johnstone's new site.

The graduate of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music defines himself as a "Singer, Actor, Model" on his website and he's certainly hard to peg. The lyric baritone has sung with the Glimmerglass Opera, Lyric Opera San Diego, Opera Pacific, Cincinnati Pops, Boston Pops and performing Poulenc’s Le bal masqué for Baritone and Chamber Orchestra with Maestro James Levine of the Metropolitan Opera.

As you can see from the video he's also crossed over into musicals. But like many singers who we've featured on this site, including Hadleigh Adams and Matt Morris, their careers have also reached into television and even modeling. Johnstone has been seen on TLC’s “Personal Justice” and he has a recurring roles on “All My Children.”  If you visit his website, you can also see more examples of his modeling for David Barton Gym and DETAILS magazine.

We also want to remind readers that the Five Boroughs Music Festival is kicking off its season on Thursday, October 6th with barihunk David Adam Moore, so make sure to order your tickets. Barihunk and artistic director Jesse Blumberg has commissioned twenty songs with themes related to Gotham  from twenty of the world's leading contemporary composers. The festival première is at the Galapagos Art Space and tickets can be purchased on their website

Five Boroughs Music Festival kicks off in Brooklyn with David Adam Moore

We're particularly excited about Glen Roven's "F from DUMBO," since many attendees may be taking the F TO DUMBO to the recital. The clever new song will be sung by David Adam Moore, making it all the more irresistible. You can sample Roven's music in the sidebar to the right with barihunk Randal Turner singing "When you are old."

Our other indulgence is American barihunk Randal Turner's new CD and DVD from his recent West Coast recital debut in San Francisco. Turner sings the music of "Living American Composers," including Glen Roven, Ricky Ian Gordon, Jake Heggie, Clint Borzoni and Julia Schwartz, who like Turner has settled in Switzerland. A little teaser: you won't want to miss the encore, which was arranged by his gifted accompanist Allen Perriello.
