Dmitri Hvorostovsky cancels upcoming concert

The following notice appeared on the website of the National Concert Hall where barihunk Dmitri Hvorostovsky was scheduled to perform on April 29th.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky deeply regrets that he must cancel his recital due to a change in the schedule for his cancer treatments.

Information about the concert has been removed from the Hvorostovsky’s official website, but his manager says that the Russian singer still plans on performing in a gala concert in Toronto on April 25th along with soprano Anna Netrebko and her husband tenor Yusif Eyvazov.

Hvorostovsky was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the summer of 2015 and subsequently cancelled concerts in Kaliningrad, Minsk and Vienna, as well as performances in the Met's current production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. He was replaced by fellow barihunks Peter Mattei and Mariusz Kwiecien.

"Marty in the Morning" has some fun with barihunks

Gilbert and Sullivan specialists Richard Suart and Steven Page appeared on the popular Irish radio show "Marty in the Morning" this morning. Although "The Gondoliers" was the topic, it eventually turned into a fun discussion about barihunks.  A phenomenon that they described as a bunch of "well-endowed baritones who attend gymnasiums...who are almost exclusively Americans."

The topic apparently didn't come up by accident, as Marty said his notes stated "ask about barihunks" highlighted in yellow marker. We felt bad that the two "avid watchers" of the site have never appeared on it, so we thought a post was only appropriate.

The two men are performing "The Gondoliers" at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Thursday, January 10th. Tickets are available online.
