Zachary James prepares for Met debut with a little Cabaret

Zachary James (Photos courtesy of the artist)
Barihunk Zachary James made quite a splash with his super sexy, scantily clad performance of Sally Bowles' "Maybe this time" from Cabaret at the Bearded Ladies’ Late Night Snacks Cabaret, part of Opera Philadelphia’s O19 festival and FringeArts. The lineup also includes the legendary gender bending performer Justin Vivian Bond, as well as opera legends Stephanie Blythe and Anthony Roth Costanzo. There a couple of remaining shows before the festival closes on September 29 and tickets are available online.

The festival came with the following disclaimer; "Late Night Snacks ingredients may include artistic experimentation, adult content, consensual touch, ear worms, nudity, jubilation, great selfie material, rampant queerness, and many repeat visits."

You can see Zachary James' performance HERE.

He said this of the festival. "Several of the singers from Opera Philadelphia’s O19 festival were invited to participate in Late Night Snacks Cabaret in South Philly produced by The Bearded Ladies, a month long nightly event included in this year’s Opera Philly O19 festival and Philly FringeArts festival. We love what we do as opera singers but also all have cravings to step outside of the box and explore our versatility. Late Night Snacks hosted Stephanie Blythe screlting rock and busting out Carmen with ukulele, Anthony Roth Costanzo singing jazz in a smooth baritone, Alissa Anderson belting You Don’t Own Me, Will Liverman singing gospel accompanying himself on piano like a beast, and many more stunning turns. This was a time and space to let our hearts out and explore our hidden desires as artists."

James will also be making his Met debut alongside his Late Night Snacks co-stars Anthony Roth Costanzo and Will Liverman, when he reprises his performance as Amenhotep III in Philip Glass' Akhnaten, which runs from Noevember 8-December 7. Tickets are available online.

Tobias Greenhalgh to appear in Ricky Ian Gordon's "27"

Tobias Greenhalgh
American barihunk Tobias Greenhalgh will appear in Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek's "27" with MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) on October 20 and 21. As a Gerdine Young Artist at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Greenhalgh created the roles of Leo Stein and Man Ray in the world premiere of the opera.

"27" explores the relationship between Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, who hosted regular salon evenings at their Paris home at 27 Rue de Fleurus, with such guests as Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Man Ray, Henri Matisse and Ernest Hemingway. Commissioned by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, "27" received its world premiere in June 2014.

The production was specially adapted by the composer for MasterVoices as a semi-staged production under the direction of James Robinson. Gordon expanded portions of the opera originally sung by a small male ensemble and re-scored them for the full MasterVoices chorus. The cast also features mezzo Stephanie Blythe as Gertrude Stein, Heidi Stober as Alice B. Toklas, Theo Lebow, Tobias Greenhalgh, and Daniel Brevik.

Enjoy Tobias Greenhalgh for free on the waterfront

James Valenti & Tobias Greenhalgh
Two of the most beautiful faces in opera will be on stage together this Saturday, December 14th, when the Palm Beach Opera presents its first ever free Opera @ the Waterfront concert.  Hunkentenor James Valenti (who we've snuck on this site a few times) and PBO young artist Tobias Greenhalgh will be part of this afternoon concert at the Meyer Amphitheatre on the Intercoastal Waterway.

The event is free and open to the public. It is recommended that you bring all of the essentials for a picnic in the park. There are also $100 VIP tickets available, which include reserved seating refreshments and parking. The concerts begins at 12:30 PM at 104 Datura Street in West Palm Beach.

Barihunk Tobias Greenhalgh is currently a member of the Palm Beach Opera Young Artist Program. This season, Greenhalgh will be performing the role of Leo Stein in Ricky Ian Gordon’s new opera Twenty-Seven starring Stephanie Blythe at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. The opera tells the story of Gertrude Stein’s life in Paris between World War I and World War II at her famous home at 27 Rue de Fleurus.

Greenhalgh is a recent graduate of Juilliard, where he earned both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Vocal Performance. He and fellow barihunk John Brancy are co-creators of “Operation Superpower,” a superhero opera for kids, which was recently featured on a PBS Newshour special on entrepreneurship in the classical arts.

A Goyishe Christmas with Stephanie Blythe, Steven Blier & Two Barihunks

Joshua Jeremiah & John Brancy

We mentioned the New York Festival of Song's A Goyishe Christmas to You! Yuletide Classics by Jewish Songwriters back in July, but figured it was time for a reminder. There will be two performances at Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center on Tuesday, November 29 and Thursday, December 1. The program includes not one, but two barihunks who have been featured on this site,  John Brancy and Joshua Jeremiah. They will joined by international opera star Stephanie Blythe, Lauren Worsham, Mary Testa, Josh Breitzer and the inimitable Steven Blier.

The evening will be filled by Yuletide songs from Jewish songwriters including Frank Loesser, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Johnny Marks, Irving Berlin, Jay Livingston and many others. Rumor has it that the holiday classic "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer" will be sung in Yiddish, Klezmer-style. And you wonder why we love New York?

There will also be a complimentary wine reception after the show and we'd love for our readers to send us your iPhone pictures with the singers. Send them to Barihunks@gmail.com. Call 212.501.3330 for tickets or visit the NY Festival of Song website.

Blythe and Blier together already guarantee an evening of fun of non-stop entertainment, so the two barihunks are icing on the Yule log.  Here's a little teaser for the show.

Philip Cutlip: Singer with a dancer's body

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area and are looking for something to do this weekend, look no further than Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley. One of America's greatest dance companies is teaming up with one America's great orchestras in performing Purcell's "Dido & Aeneas." To top it off, they've brought in a barihunk who is as sexy as the dancers.

The Mark Morris Dance Company and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra with soloists Philip Cutlip and Stephanie Blythe will be performing the baroque masterpiece on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Morris, who danced the role in until 2000, will move to the conductor's podium for this performance. For dance enthusiasts, you'll be curious to note that Morris has switched up his traditional casting for this performance. Amber Star Merkens will take on the role of Dido with Domingo Estrada Jr.'s performing Aeneas. Previously, the role of Dido/Sorceress was performing by a male lead. Visit the Cal Performances website for additional cast and performance information.

Here is a clip from when Mark Morris was still performing Dido & Aeneas:

Anyone who has not experienced the intuitive magic between these two companies is in for a treat. Barihunk Philip Cutlip is a regular with the orchestra and has provided some of the most thrilling baritone solos in the orchestras history. The two organizations have also collaborated on Handel's "L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, " Henry Purcell’s "King Arthur" and Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ballet-opera "Platée."
