Franco Pomponi

A baritone is an automatic candidate for Barihunks if he looks great without a shirt, but Franco Pomponi can walk on stage in a pair of tights and make someone think that they walked into the ballet. This Julliard graduate has matinee idol good looks that we usually find in a Terence McNally play on Broadway.

His big break was performing in Henze's "The Bassarids" at Theatre du Chatelet. This is no easy piece of music to sing, so the guy is a lot more than a pretty face. His Escamillo is actually sexier than most Carmens (see the posted YouTube video). I sure hope that we see a lot more of this guy on the major stages, and I mean SEE A LOT MORE!

  1. Mr. Pomponi is simply stellar. His intense gaze into your eyes that can only leave one wanting more, his voice so pure one hopes to never forget just how he made you feel the first time you listened.

  3. Franco Pomponi is seriously good. I've seen him sing in person several times, and he never ceases to amaze me -- a very consistently beautiful voice.. and he makes me swoon like Johnny Depp!

  5. I knew him when he was just "Frank" and very few people knew back then that he sang.

  6. I just had dinner with him the other night when he was in Chicago. I am just getting in to Opera so I did not know his fame at the time but the more I read about him the more interested I get.

  7. What an amazing opportunity to have had dinner with him!! Wow, you can tell that story to your children and they will be quite impressed. :)
He will be in the USA October 3rd for a performance with a Symphony orchestra and I would love to see him perform live!

  8. I was at that Oct. 3rd Kenosha Symphony Orchestra. It was an incredible concert! He was feautured along with his wife, Christine Arand (Soprano). Impressive stage presence, and incredible talent. Front row for the bargain student price of $12! I did not stick around after, but heard they were very gracious about meeting with audience members.
