Upcoming Broadcasts of Il Trovatore, Cosi fan tutte, Marriage of Figaro and Carmen

Alexey Markov

A couple of notable performances will be available online or in theaters shortly.

On June 19, the Metropolitan Opera's high-definition production of Bizet’s Carmen returns to movie theaters with barihunk Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Escamillo. He'll be joined by the equally striking mezzo Elina Garanca as Carmen and tenor Roberto Alagna Don Jose. Performance begin at 7 PM, and additional information is available at their website.

Teddy Tahu Rhodes sing the Torreador Song from Carmen:

Perhaps for sheer star power and vocal thrills, not much will be able to top Verdi's Il trovatore from the Bavarian State Opera on Friday, July 5th. The cast will featured tenor heartthrob Jonas Kaufmann as Manrico, the thrilling soprano Anja Harteros as Leonora and Alexey Markov as Count di Luna.

The performance starts at 7 PM German time (1 PM EST/10 AM PST) and can be viewed online.

Alexey Markov sings "Eri tu" from Un Ballo in Maschera:

La Monnaie will have their performance of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte available online for three weeks beginning on June 26th. The cast includes baritones William Shimmell as Don Alfonso and Andreas Wolf as Guglielmo. Visit their online site to watch the performance.

The 2012 performance of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro from Glyndebourne will be streamed online on July 12th. The cast includes Vito Priante as Figaro and Audun Iversen as the Count. The all-star cast is rounded out by Isabel Leonard as Cherubino, Sally Matthews as the Countess and Ann Murray as Marcellina. Additional information is available online.

For readers who want to enjoy plenty of opera online, we would suggest the Met Opera on Demand, which features video and audio performances from the Met archives; Medici.tv, which has a catalogue of over 50 operas and numerous instrumental performances; and, Sonostream, which streams concerts and opera online from Vienna.

Andre Schuen

We received an email from Germany informing us that barihunks Bo Skovhus and Christopher Maltman would be performing Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte" and that Erwin Schrott and Simon Keenlyside would be perfoming "Le Nozze di Figaro" at the Salzburg Festival in Austria. Those performances will be in August 2011 and July 2011 respectively, so we have plenty time of time to cover it.

At the end of the email they asked us if we were familiar with Andre Schuen. They raved about his voice and incredible fidelity to the text. We thought that he was good enough and sexy enough to introduce him to the site. Let us know what you think at Barihunks@gmail.com.

Guido Loconsolo in La Boheme

Guido Loconsolo

We can't imagine a better way to start the week that with sexy Italian barihunk Guido Loconsolo singing his highly acclaimed portrayal of Marcello in La Boheme. He also has that amazing Italian style that defines fashion at its best.

For those hoping to see Loconsolo live, he has a couple of Belcore's on his schedule. First at Opera de Lille opposite the hunkentenor Bülent Bezdüz. He then flies off to Berlin where he will reprise the role at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin opposite two more hunky Nemorino's: Pavel Brelik and Leonardo Capalbo.

Hanno Müller-Brachmann

For those of you who will be in Berlin, barihunk Hanno Müller-Brachmann will be featured in two Mozart operas during that time, Cosi fan tutte and The Magic Flute.

Ildebrando d'Arcangelo's Mozart Trilogy

Two of the world's greatest artists, Diana Damrau and Ildebrando d'Arcangelo, teamed up with Riccardo Muti in 2006 for a performance of "Tutto è tranquilo e placido" from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in Vienna. He is currently performing the opera at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich with fellow barihunk Mariusz Kwiecien. Tickets are almost completely sold out, so order now if you plan on attending.

We're posting this video to preview d'Arcangelo's mastery of the Mozart Trilogy: Nozze, Giovanni and Cosi.

The Italian barihunk recently performed Cosi fan tutte at the Opéra de Paris with fellow barihunk Paolo Szot. In December, he pairs up with Mozart and yet another barihunk as he performs Don Giovanni opposite Alex Esposito's internationally acclaimed Leporello. The performance will be at the Staatsoper in Vienna under Franz Welser-Möst.

In January 2011, d'Arcangelo returns to Vienna to perform Cosi again under conductor Jérémie Rhorer.

Culture Kiosque Interviews Ildebrando d'Arcangelo

By Patricia Boccadoro

PARIS, 30 MARCH 2010 — When Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is described as "the hottest thing in Opera these days," it is a winking acknowledgment of the many meanings of the term "hot." But the Italian bass-baritone superstar is charmingly self-deprecating and approachable, as our Patricia Boccadoro recently found out. [Continued HERE]

Luca Pisaroni: The Complete Package

There are a number of barihunks who as individuals are worth the price of admission. Simon Keenlyside, Mariusz Kwiecien and Erwin Schrott certainly come to mind as singers who look good, are great actors and are also amazing singers. There are lesser known barihunks like Kyle Ketelsen, Wes Mason, Kelly Markgraf and Randal Turner who we feel also deliver the complete package night in and night out. However, if there is one barihunk who probably already belongs in a class with Keenlyside, Kwiecien and Schrott it is Luca Pisaroni.

His recent video of Ercole that we featured is a tour de force and he may already be one of the ten best exponents of Mozart in the world today. Period. Here are three clips of this gifted young singer performing Mozart, so that you can judge for yourself. Few singers can bring these characters to life like Pisaroni and his vocal nuances are nothing short of phenomenal.

Apparently, opera houses are recognizing his gifts as a Mozartean, as his schedule includes a current run of Figaro in Amsterdam, Leporello at Glyndebourne this summer, Figaro in San Francisco this fall and then the Count in Houston early next year. If you can make it to any of these performances, we guarantee that you will be in for a real treat.

Luca Pisaroni in a Cosi that takes a Village (People)

Poor Luca Pisaroni had to look like the cop from Village People in this production of Cosi fan tutte from Paris. However, he sings beautifully with soprano Rinat Shaham in this rehearsal video. One year ago we posted pictures of Luca Pisaroni sporting a different and more buff look in a production of Hercules.

Can You Tell Them Apart?

The Arizona Republic newspaper recently ran this paragraph in a review of Cosi fan Tutti at Arizona Opera:

The girls and boys are pretty much interchangeable - can you tell the difference between Guglielmo (David Adam Moore) and Ferrando (Gordon Gietz)? Didn't think so.

I'm not sure that it matters if one can tell them apart. They're both pretty hot and we happily welcome tenor Gordon Gietz to the site.
