Having seen the Kwiecien and Hvorostovsky videos, I have to say that I prefer the raw energy of Kwiecien. I'd add a scene at the end where Tatiana sits down to write another letter and says, "I'm on my way, baby, I changed my mind."
All good baritones (barihunks), but Kwiecien is the runaway choice for this role. He brings another dimension to the role that no one has done in modern times.
Saw Mariusz in the Met production in Chicago a couple of seasons ago, the year after I saw Hvorostovsky three times at the Met. I loved DH's Onegin, but Kwiecien was and is, to me, the ultimate.
1. Kwiecien - Can anyone REALLY challenge him in this role? Vocally or interpretively? 2. Hvorostovsky - Regal, sexy and authentically Russian. 3. Gunn - Surprised me as Billy Budd with his depth. He's not just a pretty boy.
Anonymous, if Gunn were in the Met Production, there is a costume change onstage as part of the production; so, you would see him waist up---is that enough?
Dmitri Hvorostovsky all the way!

ReplyDeleteWell, Gunn wouldn't be able to take his shirt off in this role! Kwiecien woould be the best choice of the three.
