Happy Birthday, Randal Turner! 生日快樂

Randal Turner is about to debut in China

We'd like to wish Randal Turner a very special birthday.

We've met some amazing talents and incredible singers since starting Barihunks and Randal Turner counts among our favorites. He is one of many talented singers who we discovered singing in Europe who had yet to appear in the United States. Like Luca Grassi who made his belated U.S. debut at the Dallas Opera tonight, the American-born Turner didn't appear on stage in the U.S. until 2010 when he was cast as the title character in Don Giovanni at the Michigan Opera Theater.

Turner followed his critical success in Detroit with his West Coast recital debut in San Francisco, which has been recorded and is for sale on this site.  He was recently engaged by the Washington National Opera to cover Placido Domingo in Gluck's Iphigenie en Tauride and will be making his debut at the New York City Opera in February 2012 in Rufus Wainwright's "Prima Donna." Turner was also named the world's sexiest Don Giovanni in a reader poll on this site, beating out international superstars like Simon Keenlyside and Mariusz Kwiecien.

The legendary conductor Loren Maazel is now taking Randal Turner to China to make his Asian debut as the title character in Rossini's Barber of Seville. The performance is a co-production between the Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts and Maazel's Castleton Festival. Performances run from November 24-27.

Review of Randal Turner's New CD: "His delivery can by hypnotic"

Randal Turner's amazing new CD

Arthur Leonard, who writes the insightful blog Leonard Link, has written a review of barihunk Randal Turner's new CD "Living American Composers." Here it is:

After reading about Randal Turner on the barihunks website, I was inspired to search out his recent vocal recital release, available through CDbaby.com, which documents his San Francisco recital debut at Swedenborgian Church on December 6, 2010.  With pianist Allen Perriello as his collaborator, Turner presents an interesting mix of music by American composers, including both more familiar names (Ricky Ian Gordon and Jake Heggie) and new discoveries (Glen Roven, Julia Schwartz, and Clint Borzoni).  All are worth hearing, but I especially enjoyed the Gordon songs.  I've listened to a lot of Gordon's music lately, finding the composer's own recordings to be a useful reference but especially enjoying his songs in select groupings within mixed recitals by other composers and performers, where I think they make an even stronger impact and tend to stand out for their sensitive word-setting.  In this case, we have his "Four Poems by Dorothy Parker" and an aria from his opera "The Grapes of Wrath."  From Heggie, whose music is predictably mellifluous, we have two songs, and an aria from his opera "Moby Dick," which was premiered last year in Texas.

The Roven  pieces are "Four Melancholy Songs," using verses by William Butler Yeats.  I might have advised against starting a recital with four melancholy songs - a bit of a downer, no matter how artful they are - and started with Julia Schwartz's "Don Juan at Forty," to have a shot of humor at the beginning.  But both are performed with great sensitivity by Turner and Perriello, and are certainly worth discovering, as are the closing songs, two Whitman poems set by Borzoni.  In his fascinating note, Turner describes their composition as a true collaboration.  For an encore, they went with the physical setting and presented an arrangement by pianist Perriello of the old standby, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," by Goerge Cory and Douglass Cross.

My favorite vocal types are countertenor and baritone, so I have to add Randal Turner to my collection of favorites.  I certainly hope he gets more recording opportunities.  His voice is rich and dark and he controls it superbly, without the occasional sluggishness one can sense with big baritones.  He is especially effective singing long, drawn-out lines softly -- something one doesn't necessarily expect from baritones -- and his delivery can be hypnotic.  More, please!

Randal Turner Reprises Don Giovanni

Marinel Cecilia & Randal Turner rehearse (Photo by Marinel Cecilia)
Barihunk Randal Turner, who readers voted as the world's sexiest Don Giovanni, is back as the title character in a production at the Teatro de la Opera in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There will be two performances at the Centro de Bellas Artes on March 24 and 26. Call (787) 763-2234 for tickets.

Randal Turner seduces Maria Leticia Hernandez

Of course, Turner will have some big shoes to fill on the island, as Puerto Rican barihunk Justino Diaz was a famous Don Giovanni (and Leporello) during his successful international career. Apparently, Turner will literally be filling the exact same shoes that Diaz wore when he performed the title role. Here he is singing Leporello's "Catalogue aria":

You can listen to Randal Turner on English radio today from Puerto Rico at 4:30 PM AST discussing the role. Here he is singing "Deh vieni alla finestra":

Randal Turner sings Messiah in Birmingham

Randal Turner's CD cover
Now that Thanksgiving is over, we begin our annual posts on Messiahs around the world. One that we're particularly excited about is in Birmingham, Alabama with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Randal Turner will be singing the baritone part and will be joined by two other amazing male voices: countertenor Ryan Belongie and tenor Colin Ainsworth. Kimberly McCord will take on the soprano part. Performances are on December 15 and 16 and tickets are available online.

Last year, the Indianapolis Performing Arts Examiner wrote of his Messiah:

Of all the special moments (and there were many) provided by each singer, there was one that stood out. With his deeply rich and imposing voice, Turner was commanding when he sang the familiar, "The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

Turner has shown himself to be adept at singing everything from early music to modern music. We've featured him in another Handel role, Siroe, as well as last year's Messiah in Indianapolis. His range of roles has taken him into Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini, as well as contemporary composers like Benjamin Britten, John Cage, Andre Previn and Rufus Wainwright. His CD of "Living American Composers" remains one of our favorite song recitals and is still available at CD Baby.

Randal Turner sings "Gelido inogni vena from Handels' Siroe:

Of course, you can enjoy Randal Turner in our 2013 Barihunks Charity Calendar. He's appearing for the second year in a row and has an entire month dedicated to him:

Randal Turner returns home for two concerts

Randal Turner: The original "Barihunk in Bed"
Zürich-based barihunk Randal Turner, is returning to his native Indiana for two shows. The first is an intimate concert at the Waynetown Baptist Church with accompanist Karen Wilkinson. The concert is near the farm with Turner grew up before heading off to Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and eventually the International Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera. The performance is on Sunday, May 29th at 10:30 AM.

Turner is back home to perform the role of Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen with the Indianapolis Symphony. Turner first performed the role in Sassari in Sardinia in 2002, and has subsequently sung it in Linz, Austria and Luzern, Switzerland. He will be joined by the Latvian mezzo-soprano Oksana Volkova as Carmen and tenor Evan Bowers as Don José. Performances are on June 10 and June 12 and tickets are available online.

Randal Turner and Enrique Ambrosio perform "Je suis Escamillo" from Carmen:

Turner has appeared numerous times in our Barihunks charity calendar and was the beneficiary of the proceeds being used to help fund his CD of Living American Composers, which includes music by Jake Heggie, Clint Borzoni, Ricky Ian Gordon, Glen Roven and Julia Schwartz. He was also the original "Barihunk in Bed," which is our calendar theme this year. Singers who want to submit pictures for this year's calendar should send them to Barihunks@gmail.com.

The songs are based on "I Dream’d in a Dream" from “Leaves of Grass” and "That Shadow, My Likeness" and are being heard for the first time on the West Coast.

The concert will also include the world premiere of Julia Schwartz's “Don Juan at Forty” from “Histories of Desire” by Ron Butlin, as well as arias by Ricky Ian Gordon and his "Four Poems by Dorothy Parker," Glen Roven's “Four Melancholy Songs” based on poems by William Butler Yeats, arias by Jake Heggie and his songs "In Praise of Songs that Die" based on poem by Vachel Lindsay and "In the Morning" based on an A.E. Randal Turner makes network TV debut; Donizetti up next

Which Tristan would Isolde fall for?: Randal Turner (L) or Joseph Albert-Ludwig (R)
Barihunk Randal Turner made his network television debut this week in the premiere episode of "Elementary" on CBS. The show is a modern take on Sherlock Holmes with Jonny Lee Miller as the famed detective and Lucy Liu as his sidekick Watson. In the episode in which Turner appears, Holmes and Watson attend the opera where soprano Melissa Zapin and Turner are performing Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde." The next episode airs on October 4th on CBS.

 The CBS trailer of "Elementary":

Although Turner would look like an amazing Tristan, it's unlikely that he'll ever be seen in the role, which is written for a tenor. In fact, he'd look like a great Lohengrin or Siegmund, making us wonder if Wagner should have written those roles for baritone (who would look more the part). For the record, Turner does have one Wagner opera under his belt, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which he performed in Darmstadt, Germany.

Turner can next be seen on October 13th at the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria where he'll be performing "The salon cantatas of the Bel Canto” with I Virtuosi ambulanti. Tickets are available online. You can hear Turner sing Donizetti's Canto XXXIII from a previous performance with I Virtuosi ambulanti on his website.

Sexiest "Don Giovanni" Coming to Michigan Opera

In March 2009, Barihunks asked readers to pick the world's sexiest Don Giovanni. We had an incredibly hot group of contestants that included Christopher Maltman, Mariusz Kwiecien, Randal Turner, Simon Keenlyside, Cesare Siepi, Ildebrando d'Arcangelo, Daniel Okulitch, Martin Achrainer and Mark Stone. Not only are all of these men incredibly hot, but they are all pretty amazing singers who perform Mozart's classic as well as anyone on the stage today.

Our readers are a pretty sophisticated bunch and in the end American Randal Turner beat out two other barihunks who also play the role with physically erotic gusto, Simon Keenlyside and Mariusz Kwiecien. Turner has gone on to be a regular on this site and we've bemoaned the fact that despite his American roots, his career has been centered in Europe. To our shear delight, the Michigan Opera Theater has hired Randal Turner to replace fellow barihunk Paulo Szot, who withdrew from the production. It's difficult from their website to figure out what nights he's singing, as he's alternating performances with Robert Gierlach. However, we've confirmed that Turner is performing on April 14th & 17th.

Here is a YouTube clip of Randal Turner singing a beautifully nuanced performance of "Deh, vieni, alla finestra." If you're anywhere near Michigan, we suggest that you click HERE and buy your tickets today. This is a U.S. debut that shouldn't be missed!

Gay Composers Featured in NY and SF

Blier & Blumberg's "Manning the Canon"
The always brilliant and informative Steven Blier  has put together a program of song entitled "Manning the Canon: Songs of Gay Life" with his New York Festival of Song. The genesis of the concert is fascinating, as Blier first conceived of the idea twenty-two years ago and it didn't come to life until he mentioned it to barihunk Jesse Blumberg.

Blumberg, who is a favorite of this site, also runs the Five Boroughs Music Festival, as well as performing as a singer. Blumberg and Blier decided to put together the program last year, but a family emergency forced the singer to cancel. Another favorite of this site, fellow barihunk Matthew Worth, stepped in and took over the program.

Jesse Blumberg & Matt Worth

Last night Blumberg, Blier and Worth reprised the program along with tenor Scott Murphree and bass Matt Boehler. The program inlcuded Marc Blitzstein’s “Purest Kind of a Guy," Christopher Berg’s "Is It Dirty?," Lutvak and Campbell's "Exit Right," Schubert's quartet for four male voices “Auflösung," Tchaikovsky’s “At the Ball," Poulenc’s “Montparnasse," Griffes’s “Evening Song,” John Wallowich’s  “Bruce.” Bolcom’s “Piano Walk” and “I’ll Be By,” Camille Saint Saëns’s “Si vous n’avez rien à me dire,”  Benjamin Britten’s “Night covers up the rigid land,” Manuel de Falla’s “Polo," Cy Coleman's "Tennis Duet,"  Chris DeBlasio’s “Walt Whitman in 1989,”Bernstein's “To What You Said,” and Cole Porter's "You're the Top."

There is one more performance of "Manning the Canon" on December 2 and tickets are available HERE.

Here is an article from Capital New York about the concert, which also raises the (somewhat ridiculous) question of whether a straight singer like Blumberg can sing "gay music." The answer appears to be what we all should know already: Music is a universal language.

Blumberg is not new to gay themed music, as he premiered Ricky Ian Gordon's "Green Sneakers," which we featured on this site.

Barihunk Randal Turner Sporting Our Favorite Tee Shirt

Fans of Gordon's in the San Francisco Bay Area can hear the amazingly talented barihunk Randal Turner perform his "Four Poems by Dorothy Parker." Turner's program, which features America's greatest living composers, also features music by four gay composers, Glen Roven, Clint Borzoni, Jake Heggie and Gordon.

Borzoni, who studied with David Del Tredici and Lee Hoiby, has written a piece for Randal Turner that is based on Walt Whitman and is dedicated to the gay teens who have recently committed suicide. The program also features another piece written for Turner, Julia Schwartz's "Don Juan at 40" based on a from Histories of Desire by Ron Butlin.

Tickets for the Randal Turner concert are available HERE.

Imagine Randal Turner Dressed Like This

[Left - Erwin Schrott in Don Giovanni; Right - Randal Turner]

Every so often Barihunks proclaims an upcoming performance a "must see" event. The recent Don Giovanni at New York City Opera was certainly one of those. The latest is the April run of Don Giovanni at the Michigan Opera Theater featuring Randal Turner, who won our "Sexiest Don Giovanni" contest last year.

The production is John Pascoe's extremely sexy version that starred barihunk Erwin Schrott at Washington National Opera in 2007 [see photo above]. Schrott was pretty damn sexy in those costumes and we can't wait to see Randal Turner show off his stuff on stage. Not only is Turner a gifted singer and certifiable barihunk, but he was trained as a dancer and can move on stage like few other singers.

By the way, the extremely talented Kelly Kaduce will be singing Donna Elvira. We mention this because she is married to barihunk Lee Gregory and we couldn't pass up an excuse to post this sexy picture of him.

Barihunk duo in Festival of the Aegean's Cosi fan tutte

Randal Turner and Nikolaos Karagiaouris
If the beauty, stunning coastline and history of Greece isn't enough to lure you to this cradle of Western civilization, perhaps two barihunks singing Mozart's Cosi fan tutte will get you there.

We just learned that Barihunk calendar model Randal Turner has joined Greek barihunk Nikolaos Karagiaouris in Cosi at the Festival of the Aegean. Randal Turner was one of our earliest barihunks to be featured on this site and we discovered him singing Mozart in Pisa. Although his career has spanned the repertory from Handel to major contemporary premieres, we always love hearing him in this repertory. Turner will be singing Guglielmo and Karagiaouris will be singing Don Alfonso.

Randal Turner sings "Rivolgete a lui lo sguardo" from Cosi fan tutte:

Nikolaos Karagiaouris is new to our site. The Greek baritone studied piano and voice before embarking on an opera career that has been focused in Greece. In 2011, he won two Greek voice competitions and went on to perform at the Greek National Opera and the New Opera of Athens.

Performance are on July 9, 11 and 13. The Festival will also include a performance of Verdi's Requiem. To check out the entire Festival schedule check out their website.

Sexy preview of Randal Turner in Bonfire of the Vanities

Randal Turner as Sherman McCoy
The creators of composer Stefania de Kenessey and librettist Michael Bergmann's operatic version of Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities have been gracious enough to give us brief preview of the opera. The scene shows barihunk Randal Turner as Wall Street trader Sherman McCoy in the iconic "Masters of the Universe" scene after the prisoners have stripped him of his clothes.

The phrase is taken from the original book and refers to the ambitious young men who racked up millions of dollars in bonuses at investment banks like Salomon Brothers, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.

Randal Turner in "Masters of the Universe" scene from Bonfire:
The story takes on the universal socioeconomic tensions in 1980s New York City that is home to both Wall Street and Harlem. Turner's character is a successul bonds trader whose popularity propels him to the top of the financial world. But just as he meets the peak of his success, he collides with a scandal that brings all of New York City crashing down upon him. His former admirers and current problems include a ferocious Harlem reverend, played by fellow barihunk Keith Miller; a wealthy and sexually predatory femme fatale, sung by Yingzie Zhou; Sherman's cossetted housewife, sung by Anne-Carolyn Bird; and, an idealistic lawyer who demands better for her city, performed by Adrienne Danrich.

The world premiere will be on October 9 and 10 at the El Teatro at El Museo del Barrio in New York City. Tickets are available online.

In Praise of NY City Opera; Randal Turner Among Debuts

Rufus Wainwright & Randal Turner
We don't review singers or performances on this site and we try to stay positive, leaving the usual "opera queen" bitchiness to other sites. Our goal is to promote opera and opera singers. However, it was difficult for us over the last year to watch the criticism of New York City Opera and see the blogosphere, Facebook and Twitter full of venomous comments about the company that former Mayor Fiorella La Guardia called the "People's Opera."

We want to use the formal announcement of their new season as an opportunity to say a few words of long-overdue praise about New York City Opera. Like many opera companies, City Opera has faced some difficult financial challenges over the last year. Unlike many companies who cut performances by dropping anything that didn't sell like Butterfly, Boheme or Carmen, City Opera continued to take chances with repertory, singers and productions. They even took chances with the standard repertory and delivered a sexy "Don Giovanni" that was an artistic success in every way imaginable.

A lot of people were upset that City Opera decided to leave their home at Lincoln Center. The move out of Lincoln Center and into the Lynch Theater at John Jay College, El Teatro at El Museo del Barrio and the Brooklyn Academy of Music will save the company $4.5 million and bring opera back to the people, as La Guardia first imagined. It's not Lincoln Center that makes opera great, it's a company's creativity and dedication to great art that makes opera great.

The new City Opera season will feature more than twenty artist debuts, including the New York debut of Randal Turner, one of the most compelling and gifted performers in opera. As they have done throughout history with other notable debuts, they have trumped the more prestigious and better funded Metropolitan Opera in securing the Zurich-based American singer, who will be performing Philippe in Rufus Wainwright's U.S. debut of "Prima Donna."

Rod Gilfry, Daniel Teadt and Kelly Markgraf
There are a number of barihunk debuts other than Randal Turner that we're also excited about, including Rod Gilfry performing Don Alfonso in "Cosi fan tutte" and Daniel Teadt in the title role of Telemann’s "Orpheus." Cosi also includes the return of barihunk Philip Cutlip, who will be singing Guglielmo and "Orpheus" which will feature Kelly Markgraf at Pluto. Other debuts we're particularly excited about are soprano Amanda Majeski and tenor Taylor Stayton.

The 2011/12 spring season will open on Sunday, February 12 with La Traviata at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. "Prima Donna" will open on Sunday, February 19 also at BAM. For additional cast and performance information visit the NYCO website.

We're urging all of our readers to help City Opera survive and flourish by making an extra effort to attend their performances this year.

Barihunks On The Air - David Adam Moore & Randal Turner

One of the great things about most of our barihunks is that they are not only lovely to look at, but there are a number who are highly compelling artists. David Adam Moore and Randal Turner are not only two of the most riveting performers on stage, but they are also amazing singers. You can now hear both of them online in their most recent performances.

Moore has shown his ability to bring great depth to music ranging from the baroque to today's most modern compositions. Great examples of this are his critically acclaimed performances as Aeneas in Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" and his riveting performance of David T. Little's "Soldier Songs."

[David Adam Moore in Soldier Songs]

Moore just reprised the lead role of Prior Walter in Peter Eötvös' "Angels in America" to great critical acclaim at the Barbican Center in London with the BBC Symphony. The Sunday Times of London raved about the U.K. premiere of the opera. You can haer it on the BBC until April 14th by clicking HERE. Due to "adult language" there is a box that you'll have to click to attest that you're over the age of eighteen. Although the opera contains a lot of recitative, Eötvös has created a condensed and highly effective opera based on Tony Kushner's award-winning play.

[Randal Turner as Don Giovanni]

Randal Turner is known for his warm, mellifluous baritone as well as his ease on stage. Trained as a dancer, he brings great physicality to all of his roles. The early buzz on his Don Giovanni in Detroit is that it's going to be a sexually charged performance. For those who can't make the performance, they will still have the opportunity to hear it broadcast live on April 14th on Detroit's WRCJ 90.9. The internet stream will be available HERE at 7:30 PM EST.

Randal Turner Live from Slovenia

Randal Turner: World's Sexiest Don Giovanni turns to Haydn

Readers of this blog voted Randal Turner the sexiest Don Giovanni in the world, so we know that you enjoy looking at him and watching him perform. However, as evidenced by his amazing West Coast recital debut in San Francisco last month, he's a pleasure to listen to as well. His posting of holiday songs was also one of our most popular posts over the last few weeks.

Fans of the singer are in luck, as there will be a live broadcast of the sexy Zürich-based singer on February 12th. Turner will be performing Haydn's "The Seasons" (Die Jahreszeiten) with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra.

The performance will be available over the internet at http://tvslo.si/#ra.ars. You will be asked to download a program called Octoshape in order to hear the broadcast. We tested it and it works fine. The broadcast begins at 7:30 PM Central European time, so it's six hours difference to New York and nine hours to San Francisco/Los Angeles.

For those of you who still would rather watch Turner perform, you're in luck, as a DVD of his San Francisco recital will be released within the next few weeks. We'll have a link on this site for this of you who want to purchase a copy.

Randal Turner Featured In Detroit LGBT Paper

The buzz about barihunk Randal Turner's North American debut in Detroit has been picked up by the local gay paper Pride Source. Who could blame them for featuring the muscular singer with pictures like this?

Turner is performing the title role at the Michigan Opera Theater, but is alternating the role with Robert Gierlach. If you want to see Turner, we don't recommend using the Michigan Opera website which oddly doesn't tell you which cast is singing on any given night. We suggest that you call (313) 961-3500 for cast information. We believe that he's singing on April 14 and April 17.

You can read the entire Pride Source interview with Randal Turner HERE.

Happy Birthday, Randal Turner

Barihunk Randal Turner
The gifted singer and performer Randal Turner celebrates his birthday today and Barihunks would like to send him birthday greeting on behalf of his fans. Turner has consistently remained one of the more popular singers on this site since its inception.

The American-born, Swiss-based singer is currently working at the New York City Opera. On December 6th, he will make his West Coast recital debut in a program of songs and arias by living American composers. One of the songs by composer Clint Borzoni is dedicated to the young gay men who have recently committed suicide. We've been told that the song is absolutely beautiful. The program also includes songs by Emmy-award winning composer Glen Roven, Ricky Ian Gordon, Jake Heggie and the world premiere of "Don Juan at 40" by Julia Schwartz. Tickets are available HERE.

On December 11th, Turner can be heard in the Indianapolis Symphony's holiday concert performing selections from Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" with conductor Raymond Leppard. A week later, he will perform Handel's Messiah under the baton of Eric Stark. Click on the highlighted links for tickets.

He then returns to Switzerland and we'll be posting his schedule later this year.
