Xavier Edgardo's singing Mozarts' Requiem and Così fan tutte

Xavier Edgardo
Xavier Edgardo, one of the most exciting and gifted young singers to emerge onto the scene in recent years will be performing Mozart's Requiem with the Orquestra Sinfònica de Puerto Rico on April 16th. He'll be joined by mezzo soprano Patricia Cay, soprano Zulimar Lopez and tenor José Daniel Mojica. You can contact the Luis Ferrè Performing Arts Center at 787-620-4444 for tickets and additional information.

Mozart’s Requiem was unfinished at the time of his death and most of the completed portions are attributed to his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. There was much confusion about the completion of the work when Mozart died. This was due to Mozart's wife Constanze having to hide certain details in order to guarantee payment for the work.

Fellow Puerto Rican Justino Diaz sings Guglielmo's aria "

Xavier Edgardo will be sticking with Mozart, as he takes on Guglielmo in Mozart's Così fan tutte on April 26 & 27 at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. We've heard him sing Guglielmo's aria "

Our main mission at Barihunks is to assist young singers in their careers and we're part of the campaign to help send Xavier Edgardo to this important training program. Please join us in making a pledge of any amount, as it will go a long way in supporting this talented young artist. Click HERE to give today.

Randal Turner Reprises Don Giovanni

Marinel Cecilia & Randal Turner rehearse (Photo by Marinel Cecilia)
Barihunk Randal Turner, who readers voted as the world's sexiest Don Giovanni, is back as the title character in a production at the Teatro de la Opera in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There will be two performances at the Centro de Bellas Artes on March 24 and 26. Call (787) 763-2234 for tickets.

Randal Turner seduces Maria Leticia Hernandez

Of course, Turner will have some big shoes to fill on the island, as Puerto Rican barihunk Justino Diaz was a famous Don Giovanni (and Leporello) during his successful international career. Apparently, Turner will literally be filling the exact same shoes that Diaz wore when he performed the title role. Here he is singing Leporello's "Catalogue aria":

You can listen to Randal Turner on English radio today from Puerto Rico at 4:30 PM AST discussing the role. Here he is singing "Deh vieni alla finestra":

Celebrating Justino Diaz

Justino Diaz as Otello and an early head shot

One of our traditions that draws the most email is our "Historical Hunks" feature. People seem to have a lot of favorites from their past with Ettore Bastianini, Titta Ruffo and Theodore Uppman appearing to be the most popular with our readers. We also receive a good deal of correspondence regarding Justino Diaz, who almost stole the opera film "Otello" from Katia Ricciarelli and Placido Domingo with his searingly evil portrayal of Iago complete with his trademark rich and resonant low notes.

Diaz shot onto the international scene in 1963 when he won the Metropolitan Opera auditions. That same year he made his debut on the celebrated stage as Monterone in Rigoletto. He went on to sing on the major stages of the world, starred in films and inaugurated the new Lincoln Center in Barber's Antony and Cleopatra with Leontyne Price (who celebrated her 84th birthday yesterday).

Diaz retired in 2003 to his native Puerto Rico and runs the Casals Festival and stages opera.

We can't think of a better way to celebrate this great artist than with a few clips of his artistry, beginning with his famous Iago, his Torreador song and a trio with Joan Sutherland.
