Nicholas Crawley in sexy Cosi fan tutte at Reisoper

Yaroslav Abaimov, Robert Davies & Nicholas Crawley (L-R)
The last time that British barihunk Nicholas Crawley was featured on this site, he was featured in nothing but a towel as Don Basilio in the Nederlandse Reisoper's production of Rossini's The Barber of Seville.  He's currently appearing in with the company in Mozart's Così fan tutte in a production directed by Dutch actor Xander Straat.

He's joined by the Ferrando of hunkentenor Yaroslav Abaimov. Straat has duo outfitted in form-fitting tattoo body suits and colored beards while disguised in an effort to prove their girlfriends as unfaithful. Performances are running from February 9 -March  19 and tickets and additional cast information is available online.

Crawley studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he was awarded The Independent Opera Vocal Scholarship 2012. After completing the Master of Arts in Vocal Studies and Royal Academy Opera Advanced Diploma course he joined De Nederlands Reisopera as a resident artist where he has also performed Sleep, Hymen and Winter in Purcell's Fairy Queen as well as Petrus in a staged Bach's St John Passion.

"Certified Barihunk" Ryan Kuster takes on Don Giovanni

Opera Memphis' Facebook page and Ryan Kuster as Don Giovanni at Wolftrap
We love that Opera Memphis is referring to Ryan Kuster as a "certified Barihunk" on their Facebook page. Having seen the young American baritone in a number of roles, we can certainly verify the certification.

Kuster, who has performed all three baritone roles in Mozart's Don Giovanni, is currently singing the title role at Opera Memphis in a production directed by Ned Canty.  He recently made his symphonic début with the Los Angeles Philharmonic singing the role of Masetto in their highly acclaimed production of the opera, directed by Christopher Alden.

Opera Memphis is presenting performances on October 9 and 11 at the Germantown Performing Arts. Tickets are available online. (Unfortunately, the website does not list the remainder of the cast).

We're also looking forward to the company's Midtown Opera Festival in April 2015. The 11-day opera festival will include Tim Cipullo's Glory Denied, Poulenc's Mamelles de Tirésias and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

After Don Giovanni, Kuster dons his matadors outfit for performances as Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen at Opera Grand Rapids and the Knoxville Opera.

Aussies invade England during Diamond Jubilee

Grant Doyle and Joshua Bloom

No one saw this one coming: The Aussies invaded England in the midst of the Queen's "Diamond Jubilee" and put on quite a show. Aussie barihunks Grant Doyle and Joshua Bloom took the stage at the Garsington Opera at Wormsley estate and had the crowd thinking about things other than British Royalty and Navy flyovers.

Grant Doyle sings "Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen" from Korngold's "Die tote Stadt":

There are still six performances remaining between now and July 2nd. Check out the Garsington Opera website for more information. Also on the docket at Garsington is Mozart's "The Magic Flute" with barihunk Richard Latham, Vivaldi's "L'Olimiade," and Offenbach's "La Perichole."

Papageno won't be Richard Latham's first encounter with feathers
If you haven't been to Garsington and experienced opera in the lush English countryside, we highly recommend adding it to your travel itinerary.
