Opera's #1 site: Parterre Box

If you haven't visited La Cieca's "Parterre Box" website, then you haven't experienced the online world of opera in all its glory. La Cieca's site was the first successful non-company website to focus on opera and it's insider news, gossip, titillating photos and campiness has made it the most successful site of its kind in the world. Barihunks was inspired by Parterre in many ways and everyone involved with our site first read about the barihunks phenomenon on Parterre, so we owe her a great deal of gratitude.

Edwin Crossley Mercer: Anderson Cooper look-a-like?

It's no secret that we're HUGE fans of Edwin Crossley-Mercer at Barihunks. We named him our "Hottest Recitalist" in our "Best of 2010" and it was as much for his artistry as his hunkiness. Last month we posted a rare video of him singing the French version of the classic song "Autumn Leaves." A reader has sent us a YouTube link for the complete recital which occurred in St. Petersburg, Russia on July 2, 2010 along with mezzo Irina Bogacheva and soprano Adriana Queros.

We were thrilled to see Mercer appearing today on our other favorite opera site, Parterre Box, where they compared him to a younger Anderson Cooper. It seems like no one can enough of him, so here is the video from Russia:

The Barihunk Bench is Deep

Barihunk fans don't need to worry about a shortage of pulchritudinous low voices when Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Nathan Gunn and Rod Gilfry have to exit the stage. Ben Wager is one more example of the deep bench of hunkiness that is out there in our training centers.

Blogger extraordinaire and grande diva La Cieca first defined the phrase "barihunk" and referenced the Santa Fe Apprentice Program as fertile ground for new talent. Other programs around the country like San Francisco's Merola program and Philadelphia's Academy of Vocal Arts have also produced their fair share. Ben Wager went through both programs and he has the potential to be an instant site favorite.

Wager is a fourth year Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts and spent the summer of 2008 as a member of the prestigious Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera. During the 2008-2009 season, he will sing Enrico in Anna Bolena, Il Vescovo in La fiamma, and Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor with the Academy of Vocal Arts, and will join Minnesota Opera to sing the bass roles in the North American premiere of Jonathan Dove's Adventures of Pinocchio.

Future engagements include company debuts with Opera Company of Philadelphia (Collatinus in The Rape of Lucretia), Baltimore Opera (Der Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte) and Dallas Opera (Masetto in Don Giovanni). These are three of the top operas at Barihunks. We can't wait for him to advance to the roles of Tarquinius, Papageno and Don Giovanni.

Two Sites See Erwin Schrott Doppelgängers

Two of the most entertaining opera sites for opera fanatics have dueling ideas about who Erwin Schrott's doppelgänger might be. The always fun La Cieca nominates Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, while Opera Chic leans toward Tony Danza. To avoid confusion, Opera Chic helpfully points out that in this rare instance Schrott is the guy with his shirt ON.

My question is, why didn't I remember Tony Danza being this hot?
