Barihunk Tobias Greenhalgh will make his role debut as Silvio in Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with the Boston Lyric Opera this Fall. It will be the first time that the company has performed the classic verismo opera.
The opera will be performed at the DCR Steriti Memorial Ice Rink, where the company has previously performed Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti. Greenhalgh will be joined by tenor Rafael Rojas as Canio and Lauren Michelle as Nedda. Performances will run from September 27 – October 6, 2019 and tickets are available online.

We introduced readers to British barihunk Harry Thatcher to readers back in 2016 with a shirtless picture on the beach. We kind of lost track of him, so we were thrilled to see that he's performing Count Almaviva in the OperaVision broadcast of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro from the Royal College of Music.
You can watch the broadcast HERE until March 26, 2019. The cast also includes Adam Maxey as Figaro, Josephine Goddard as the Countess, Julieth Lozano as Susanna, and Lauren Joyanne Morris as Cherubino. The production is directed by the legendary baritone Sir Thomas Allen.

The barihunk duo of bass-barihunk Luca Pisaroni in Mahomet II and Iurii Samoilov as Omar in Rossini's Le siège de Corinthe. They are joined by John Irvin as Cléomène, Nino Machaidze as Pamyra, Sergey Romanovsky as Néoclès, Carlo Cigni as Hiéros, Xabier Anduaga as Adraste and Cecilia Molinari as Ismène. Performances are on August 10, 13, 16 and 19 and tickets are available online.
The opera premiered at the Salle Le Peletier of the Paris Opéra on October 9, 1826 and was a partial rewrite of the composer's 1820 Italian opera, Maometto II, with exactly the same story and characters. The original version premiered in Naples on December 3, 1820.
The opera commemorates the siege and ultimate destruction of the town of Missolonghi in 1826 by Turkish during the ongoing Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). The reference to Corinth is an example of allegory, although Sultan Mehmed II had indeed besieged the city in the 1450s. This same incident, condemned throughout Western Europe for its cruelty, also inspired a prominent painting by Eugène Delacroix (Greece Expiring on the Ruins of Missolonghi), and was mentioned in the writings of Victor Hugo. Lord Byron's 1816 poem The Siege of Corinth has little, if any, connection with the opera.

On August 15, Pisaroni will also perform a recital of music by Schubert, Liszt and Rossini with Giulio Zappa at the piano. Tickets are available online. He returns to the US in December as Count Almaviva in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro at the Metropolitan Opera. He rotates the role with fellow barihunk Mariusz Kwiecien.
Iurii Samoilov returns to his home base at Oper Frankfurt in October as Ned Keene in Britten's Peter Grimes. He remains with the company this season to perform Guglielmo in Mozart's Cosí fan tutte, Marullo in Verdi's Rigoletto and Dandini in Rossini's La Cenerentola.

Michael Travis Risner, who has appeared on our site in Boulder Opera's productions of Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Mozart's Don Giovanni, will be performing Figaro in the University of Northern Colorado Opera Theatre production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro on April 15th in Greeley.
The company will be performing on both April 14 and April 15 with separate casts. He'll be joined by Alberto Beltran as the Count, Meggie Moyer as the Countess, Katie Warner as Susanna, Zecheriah Oswald as Bartolo, April Phillips as Marcellina, Margaret Siegrist as Cherubino and Sean Stephenson as Basilio.
Risner received his Masters in Music in Vocal Performance
and Pedagogy from Colorado State University. He has been appearing on
the stages of Colorado's Front Range for the past 20 years as a singer,
actor, director, and stage combat instructor and choreographer (his
resume even lists "fitness model"). He has performed the title role in
Monostatos in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Dancaire in Bizet's Carmen, Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, Eddie/Dr. Scott in Rocky Horror Live!, Lancelot in Camelot, Anatoly in Chess and the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, Footloose (Chuck).
A bit of trivia about Greeley, which was was named after Horace Greeley, editor of the New-York Tribune, who came to Colorado in the 1859 Pike's Peak Gold Rush. His trip popularized the phrase "Go West, young man"
Austrian barihunk Thomas Tatzl will be making his Vienna State Opera debut this winter as Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. He'll be joined by fellow barihunk Rene Pape as Sarastro, Jörg Schneider as Tamino, Olga Bezsmertna as Pamina and Hila Fahima as the Queen of the Night.
Performances will run from December 22-29, including a performance on Christmas Day.
You don't have to wait to see him as Papageno, as he'll be performing in Die Zauberflöte at the Teatro Regio di Torino from May 16-18 with Ekaterina Sadovnikova as Pamina, Alessandro Scotto di Luzio as Tamino and Marigona Querkezi as the Queen of the Night.

This season, he's performed Ford in Verdi's Falstaff at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte in Ravenna, Novara and Piacenza. From September 22-October 1, he'll sing Count Almaviva in Jonathan Miller's production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.
John Ieuan Jones, who hails Rhos-on-Sea in North Wales, is new to our site and was suggested by a colleague at the Royal Northern College of Music, where the Welsh barihunk is in his fourth year. Jones will be performing Count Almaviva from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in operatic scenes presented at the Royal Northern College of Music Opera Theatre on January 26th. Admission is free and no tickets are required.
Jones won the James Martin Oncken Song Prize in 2015 and received 2nd place in the Musical Theatre category at the Urdd National Eisteddfod in 2015 and 2016.

Über-barihunk Gianluca Margheri will be making his role debut as the title character in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in St. Gallen. He opens on September 17, with additional performances on October 2, 5, 29 and November 1, 6, 8 and 25. Regular readers may recall that he created an internet sensation with his shirtless portrayal as Mozart's Don Giovanni, which we've covered extensively at Barihunks. Director Nicole Claudia Weber has set the action in the mid-19th century with a society that still wears corsest, and where the erotic remains a means to an end. The opening night cast will include Nikolay Borchev as Count Almaviva, Cristina Pasaroiu as the Countess, Christina Landshamer as Susanna, Theresa Holzhauser as Cherubino and Kismara Pessatti as Marcellina. The alternate cast will feature Tomislav Lucic as Figaro. Tickets are available online.

Barihunk Gianluca Margheri just finished performing the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Théâtre de la Colonne in Miramas, France, where these photos were taken. We can certainly understand how thousands of women would fall under the seductive spell of someone who looked like this!
He now takes the red-themed production by Pierre Thirion-Vallet to Théâtre des Sablons in Neuilly sur Seine, France for performances on March 19 and 20.

Zachary James and John Moore in Mazzoli's Breaking Waves
Opera Philadelphia announced their 2016-17 season, which will include the barihunk duo of John Moore and Zachary James in the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s chamber opera Breaking the Waves, which features a libretto by Royce Vavrek. Mazzoli is a graduate of Opera Philadelphia’s Composer in Residence program.
The opera is based on the Oscar-nominated 1996 film by Lars von Trier. The libretto tells the story of Bess McNeill (sung by Kiera Duffy), a religious young woman with a deep love for her
husband Jan (sung by John Moore), a handsome oil rig worker. When Jan becomes paralyzed in an
off-shore accident, her marital vows are put to the test as he
encourages her to seek other lovers and return to his bedside to tell
him of her sexual activities. He insists that the stories will feel like
they are making love together and keep him alive. Bess’s increasing
selflessness leads to a finale of divine grace, but at great cost.
Performances will run from September 22 through October 1st. The cast also includes the rising tenor sensation David Portillo, Eve Gigliotti and Patricia Schuman.
Brandon Cedel and John Chest in The Marriage of Figaro
The company's new production of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro will feature the barihunk duo of Brandon Cedel as Figoro and John Chest as the Count. Performances will be at the Academy of Music and will also feature Ying Fang as
Susanna, Layla Claire as the Countess, John Chest, Cecelia Hall as Cherubino and Patrick Carfizzi as Bartolo.
Other operas in the season include Puccini's Turandot with Christine Goerke in the title role and Daniel Belcher as Ping; a re-imaging of Verdi's Macbeth by South African director Brett Bailey set in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the title character as a Congolese warlord: and Stephanie Blythe making her role debut as the title character in Rossini’s Tancredi along with Daniel Mobbs as Orbazzano.

For the past four years, the calendar has raised money for young artist
programs and young artist projects. Proceeds from this year's calendar
will fund the creation of the Foundation for the Advancement of
Baritones (FAB), which will fund baritone and bass cash prizes at song
competitions, commission music for baritones and basses, and be used to
fund other projects featuring low male voices.

We have "Barihunk scouts" on three continents who keep us well apprised of singers and productions worldwide, but we rarely get messages from Russia even though we get a lot of traffic from the country. So we were pretty thrilled to receive a message from a fan in Moscow letting us know about the barihunk duo alternating Count Almaviva in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Bolshoi Theater. We originally featured Konstantin Shushakov back in 2011 when he took 2nd place at Operalia, but Andrei Jilihovschi is new to us. Shushakov was born in Udmurtia, Russia and began his vocal studies at Izhevsk Music College before moving on to the Russian Academy of Theatrical Art. He has been a regular at the Bolshoi Theatre since 2011, where he's been critically acclaimed as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Yeletsky in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. In the 2012-13 season he made his debut in the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Maribor Opera. Last season, he appeared as Guglielmo in Mozart's Così fan tutte at La Scala in Milan.
Shushakov appears as the Count on September 16, 18 and 20.
30-year-old Andrei Jilihovschi was born in Moldova and completed his studies in choral
conducting at the Ştefan Neaga Music College in the capital city of Chisinau. During his time at school he also studied singing in the opera studio and then continued his studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov St.
Petersburg State Conservatoire where he sang he title role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.
From 2010-2012, he was a soloist with the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg where he appeared as Belcore in Donizetti's L’elisir d’amore, Schaunard in Puccini's La Boheme, Robert in Tchaikovsky's Iolanta, the Prince in Asafiev’s Cinderella, Silvano in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, Baron Douphol in Verdi's La Traviata and Dancairo in Bizet's Carmen.
In October 2012 he joined the Bolshoi Theatre Young Artist Program and become a member of the Bolshoi ensemble two years later. He will be singing Dancaïro in Bizet's Carmen with the company from
September 4-9. Next year, he makes his debut at the Opéra National de Paris as Robert in Tchaikovsky's Iolanata.
Erwin Schrott's stage performances for the remainder of the year is nothing but Mozart's Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro. Tomorrow night he performs Don Giovanni in a concert version of the opera in the tent in Gstaad performed by the orchestra La Scintilla from the Zurich Opera under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado. The cast includes Véronique Gens and Regula Mühlemann.
On September 15ht, he opens at the Royal Opera House in London for seven performances as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro with fellow barihunk Stéphane Degout as Count Almaviva. The cast includes Ellie Dehn as the Countess, Kate Lindsey as Cherubino and Ann Murray as Marcellina.
In October, he heads to the Wiener Staatsoper to portray Leporello in Don Giovanni with fellow barihunk Mariusz Kwiecien in the title role. The cast includes Andrea Carroll as Zerlina and Juliane Banse as Donna Elvira.
The trend continues into 2016, when he returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich as Don Giovanni in a barihunk-laden cast that includes Alex Esposito as Leporello and Brandon Cedel and Tareq Nazmi rotating as Masetto.
His only U.S. performance is scheduled for December 12th when he performs Rojotango, his show of tangos by Astor Piazzolla and Pablo Ziegler as well as Argentinean and Brazilian folk songs.

Philippe Sly, who is one of our favorite young artists in the world, was recently featured in his hometown newspaper, which you can read HERE. Our favorite quote from the article comes from conductor Patrick Summer, who captures Sly's artistry perfectly:
“Philippe has a great and rare gift,” notes Patrick Summer, one of the
world’s eminent opera conductors, who is on the podium for the SFO
Figaro. “And that is his ability to be a storyteller, to illuminate the
text and make the music pulsate off the page. He gives me great hope for
the future of opera, which is in a vulnerable position. I can’t wait,
in fact I hope I have the privilege and the good fortune, to conduct him
in (Figaro) in 10 years, in 20 years, and see what he does.”

Grand Island, New York native James Wright is new to our site, but may be a familiar site to devotees of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, where he has competed twice in the Buffalo/Toronto District division. He was inspired to pursue singing after hearing Bryn Terfel sing in Wagner's Das Rheingold at the Metropolitan Opera.
He's currently singing the Count in Nickel City Opera's production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, where someone on the production staff suggested that he be featured on Barihunks. Performances are on June 26 and 28 at the Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, New York. Wright is also the Artistic Adminstrator of the company, as well as an adjunct professor of voice at Canisius College. Figaro will be sung by Valerian Ruminski, who founded the company.

The San Francisco Opera kicks off one of its most exciting summer season's this weekend in decade. First up is Hector Berlioz's epic 5 1/2 hour masterpiece Les Troyens with Anna Caterina Antonacci as Cassandra. She is perhaps the most exciting singing actress in opera since Leonie Rysanek.
The opera has not been performed in San Francisco in 47
years, where the U.S. stage premiere took place two years earlier in 1956 with Regine Crespin and Jon Vickers. The five-act opera is set to Virgil’s classical poem The Aeneid and is performed in
two parts: “The Capture of Troy,” the Greek siege of ancient Troy
including the famed Trojan Horse, and “The Trojans at Carthage,” the
escape of the Trojans to the North African Mediterranean city of
Carthage.

Bass-Barihunk Christian Van Horn takes on the role of the queen's adviser Narbal, in an all-star cast that also includes Susan Graham as Dido, Bryan Hymel as Aeneas and Sasha Cooke as Anna. The production is the largest physical production ever
to be presented as the War Memorial Opera House, requiring 134
artists on stage and 95 musicians in the orchestra pit and backstage.
The production first opened in 2012 at London’s the Royal Opera and later at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. Following the San
Francisco Opera performances, the production will be seen at the Vienna
State Opera. Performances run from June 7–July 1 and tickets are available online.

Van Horn also appears as the Field Marshall in the world premiere of Italian composer Marco Tutino’s Two Women (La Ciociara), with a libretto by the composer and Fabio Ceresa. Anna Caterina Antonacci is also back as the mother Cesira. Her daughter will be played by Sarah Shafer. It is the first time in the history of San Francisco Opera that an Italian composer has been commissioned to write a new opera for the company.
The
opera is based on 20th-century Italian author Alberto Moravia’s novel of
the same name. Moravia’s critically-acclaimed 1958 work was adapted in
1960 by noted Italian film producer Carlo Ponti into a film directed by
Vittorio De Sica starring Sophia Loren. Loren won the 1962 Academy Award
for Best Actress for the performance—the first artist to win an Oscar
for a foreign language film. Performances run from June 13-30.
Van Horn next appears as Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco at the Seattle Opera from August 8-22.
Italian barihunk Vittorio Prato is at the Rome Opera singing the Count in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro opposite fellow barihunks Markus Werba and Thomas Tatzl, who are rotating the role. Prato has two performances remaining. On May 29th, he'll perform with Tatzl along with Donata D'Annunzio Lombardi as the Countess, Anna Kasyan as Sussanna and Raffaela Lupinacci as Cherubino. On June 3rd, he'll join Werba in a cast with Eleonara Buratto as the Countess, Rosa Feola as Susanna and Michaela Selinger as Cherubino. Tickets and additional cast information is available online.
Prato also took some time out to pose in a barihunk tee shirt alongside one of Rome's 2,000 fountains. Prato is featured in this year's Viva, Italia! barihunk's calendar and we hope to have him back for our 2016 edition.
Prato next heads to Firenze where he will perform Figaro in the opera based on the first part of the Pierre Beaumarchais trilogy, Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia. Le nozze di Figaro is based on the second part of the Beaumarchais trilogy. Prato will rotate the role with the rising young Korean baritone Julian Kim. We briefly featured Chinese barihunk Yunpeng Wang in a post about the Operalia Competition in 2002, but have never properly introduced him to readers. Opera goers in New York may already know him, as a member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program who has already been cast at the Metropolitan Opera as Fiorello in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and the Flemish Duputy in Verdi’s Don Carlo.
He is currently headed back to his native country to make his role debut as Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di
Figaro at the spectacular National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Performances are running from May 14-17 and tickets and additional cast information are available online.
Earlier this year, he sang Agamemnon in the Lindemann/Juilliard co-production of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide. This summer he returns to the Rossini Opera Festival as Filippo in a new production of La Gazzetta in Pesaro, Italy.

Wang has been the recipient of several awards, including three prizes at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition: the 2nd Place Prize, the Zarzuela Prize, and the Audience Award. He has won First Prize in the 2014 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition, and First Prize in the Alan M. and Joan Taub Ades Vocal Competition. As a winner of Operalia, he appeared in the Voices of 2012 concert with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV in Pécs, Hungary.
Other recent engagements include Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 and Xian Xinghai’s The Yellow River Cantata with the Hartford Symphony, and participated in the “Zürich Stiftung Opera Bel Canto Night” under the tutelage of Francisco Araiza in Switzerland.
Wang received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and a Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from The Manhattan School of Music, where he was invited to attend on full scholarship.
Two of our favorite singers in the world, Alex Esposito and Stéphane Degout, are appearing together in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro from April 11-22 at the Theater and der Wien. Degout is singing the Count, while Esposito takes on Figaro.
The two have been having fun on Facebook posting pictures of themselves "napping" at rehearsals. We're not quite sure how Susanna feels about her beloved Figaro ending up in bed with the Count, but it certainly adds an interesting (offstage) twist to the story.

Esposito will stick to Mozart taking on his signature role of Leporello in Don Giovanni at the Royal Opera House in London from June 12-25. Degout will head to the Paris Opera to sing Apollo in Gluck's Alceste (and Team Barihunks will be in the audience). That performance runs from June 16-July 15,
Italian bass-barihunk Mirco Palazzi, who made his U.S. debut at Leporello in 2010 with the Dallas Opera, returns to the company in the title role of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. The opera opens tonight and runs through November 9th.

Opening night is also an opportunity to share the opera with family and friends, as the performance will be simulcast live from the Winspear Opera House to Klyde Warren Park.The action begins at 6:30pm and will include a screening of the 1945 Three Stooges classic “Micro-Phonies”, the “Worst Bridesmaid’s Dress Ever” contest and a bouquet toss.
European fans of Palazzi can see him in the role at the Teatro Regio in Turin from February 12-25. The cast also includes fellow Italian barihunk Ildebrando D'Arcangelo.

Barihunk Mariusz Kwiecien will be featured in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's annual "Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park" concert on Saturday, September 6 at 7:30 pm. The free concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion will feature previews of Lyric's upcoming 2014-15 season.
Kwiecien will be featured in one of his signature roles, that of the title character in Mozart's Don Giovanni. He will join sopranos Marina Rebeka and Ana María Martínez, and bass Andrea
Silvestrelli in the final scene from the opera. For those of you unfamiliar with the history of this Barihunks site, it was inspired by a performance of Kwiecien as Don Giovanni.
The program will also feature Wagner's overture to Tannhäuser, the Act One finale of Puccini's Tosca featuring baritone Mark Delavan and tenor John Irvin, the entire third act of Verdi's Rigoletto, and the chorus "Patria oppressa" from Verdi's Macbeth.

Performances of Don Giovanni run from September 27 to October 29. Kwiecien will return to the Metropolitan Opera from December 4-20 as Count Almaviva in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.
