According to our Google Analytics, two of our most popular posts of all-time continue to be those of Gabriel Bermudez appearing nude in Poulenc's  "Les mamelles de Tirésias" and Daniel Okultich appearing nude in Howard Shore's "The Fly." Until now, we've only had pictures and no video. But thanks to a European broadcast of the opera, we now have some video to share of the scene that prompted fellow barihunks Michael Mayes and Michael Todd Simpson on the Texapolitan Opera podcast to coin the phrase "The Full Okulitch" to describe a full-frontal nude scene in opera.



The Canadian barihunk can next be heard in recital at the Glenn Gould Studio on December 4th in Toronto. You can check out his profile on the CBC website where you can also listen to him discuss his status as a barihunk.

We also highly recommend that you add Okulitch's wonderful recital "The New American Art Song" to your CD collection. You can purchase it at the GPR Records website. 

For the record, the only other barihunk to appear on this site other than Bermudez and Okulitch performing "The Full Okulitch" is Troy Cook. We should use this opportunity to point out that we only publish nudity if it was performed on stage. We have pictures of Leigh Melrose from "Riders to the Sea" and Laurent Alvaro from the French production of "The Fly," but felt the quality wasn't good enough to post. We also hear that there are photos of Eugene Brancoveanu from "Little Caesar," but we've never found them.

GET WELL, Daniel Okulitch & Carin Gilfry

We learned tonight that Daniel Okulitch was involved in a very serious car accident in Los Angeles. It was serious enough that he had to be removed from the vehicle by a jaws of life. In the vehicle with him was mezzo soprano Carin Gilfry, daughter of barihunk Rod Gilfry. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

We took this news particularly hard, as Okulitch has played a major role in the success of this site. His performance in "The Fly" and willingness to own his sexiness and to celebrate it onstage has helped make opera attractive to a whole new generation. He is a gifted singer and performer and every day that he is off of the stage is a loss to opera.

Please keep him and Carin in your thoughts and pull for a full recovery for these two wonderful young artists.

A Naked Barihunk to Ring in the New Year: Laurent Alvaro

I can't think of a better way to ring in the New Year than with a barihunk in the buff. Also, a new year seems like an appropriate way to introduce viewers (readers?) to a new barihunk.

Meet Laurent Alvaro, who was Seth Brendle in the second cast of The Fly at Chatelet. My understanding is that he only performed one night, leaving the rest of the performances to Daniel Okulitch, a favorite on this site. Okulitch also performed every night in L.A.

Alvaro is a 36-year-old French baritone who performs primarily in France. He has appeared in other Barihunk operas, most notably Thais and Midsummer Night's Dream. From the pictures on his website, he's apparently not afraid to show a little skin.

A Midsummer Night's "Dreamy" Cast at La Scala

If you don't have summer travel plans yet, you might want to consider booking a flight to Milan between June 6-17. The Teatro alla Scala will be performing Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream with two barihunks, David Adam Moore and Daniel Okulitch. The rest of the cast is pretty impressive as well, with countertenor David Daniels, sopranos Rosemary Joshua and Erin Wall, and Andrew Davis in the pit.

Daniel Okulitch (almost) shirtless as Figaro

Daniel Okulitch is the next Nathan Gunn/Teddy Tahu Rhodes, which is a good thing. Directors are realizing that they have great voices and great bodies and are taking advantage of it.

It's not often that you see a Figaro with his shirt wide open. It adds an element to the opera that one doesn't get in most productions. Kudos to Dallas Opera for this production, which also features barihunk Michael Todd Simpson as Count Almaviva. Now that's a double beef whopper.

Okulitch is staking out firm ground as one of the leading barihunks of our generation, performing nude in The Fly, stripped down to his scivvies in Dead Man Walking and now performing with his shirt wide open in Le Nozze di Figaro. In addition to his pulchitrudinous form, he also is a very gifted singer as one can see from the video (courtesy of www.dallasopera.org).

Okulitch will be singing two more barihunk roles in the near future. He returns to his native Canada to sing Escamillo in Carmen with the Vancouver Opera in January 2009 (http://www.vancouveropera.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=184&Itemid=15). Then in May 2009, he appears in Dead Man Walking with the Ft. Worth Opera (http://www.fwopera.org).

Shoo Fly!

I flew to Los Angeles to see (and hear) Daniel Okulitch in Howard Shore's "The Fly." Unfortunately, it failed to live up to the buzz. Daniel Okulitch, fortunately, kept his barihunk credentials in tact, but it was about the only redeeming thing about this opera.

Perhaps the reviewer from the Orange County Register summed it up most succinctly:

Let's not mince words. That's always the best way. Just rip the bandage off quickly. Howard Shore's "The Fly," which was given its U.S. premiere Sunday afternoon courtesy of Los Angeles Opera, is the worst opera I've ever seen.

This was a brilliant career move by Daniel Okulitch. I bet you that by October, after the L.A. Opera run, he'll be one of the best known operatic baritones in the world. It looks like Danny boy will getting the future gigs on "Good Morning America" and "The Daily Show," not Nathan Gunn. Of course, Top Gunn does open up in Pearl Fishers on November 6th, so we may have an old-fashioned "bare the hunk" competition on our hands.
